What a crazy morning!
After an absolute low for me yesterday - on the opening day of the buck season - this morning was just awesome
We hunted in an urban/residential area pretty much 1.000 m from my house.
When we left the car at 04:15, we ran into a roebuck that just came from breakfast in one of the gardens.
Our guns were still unloaded and in the carry bag (since we walk through a residential area) and of course he made us.
I dropped my colleague off at his stand, when we all of a sudden heard a wild boar sow below us sniffing.
I gave him some last instructions and made my way back to the trail when I ran into 6 of her 20 kg piglets. As i readied my gun, mommy stepped out on the trail, checking me out very carefully, coming closer 10 cm at a time.
I thought "please don't make me shoot you..." and she turned around and ran back into the thicket just to pass my surprised hunting mate
Still a bit puzzled I finally made my way to the stand I picked earlier - high up on a rocky hill - but when I arrived there I could see the whole wild boar family passing me by below and crossing over the meadow to the other side.
I readied te gun, but couldn't get a good shot so I did not fire.
About an hour I saw a fox cub approaching on the right side of the hill around 150 m in front of me, but without back stop.
Same cub appeared later 100 m to my left, but behind some branches.
At 06:01 I got a SMS from another hunting buddy "I shot a buck. Good shot but he ran off, I'm sure he is lying there in the bushes.". So I went home picked up my dog Hugo, and went to my buddies stand in order to both help him and train my dog.
It was a good shot indeed! A decent amount of light blood from the lung shot and a decent blood trail.
I showed Hugo the blood trail and off he went. After 20 m he found the buck in the bushes, exactly as my buddy claimed.
An old buck with hardly any upper front teeth left, a good and correct kill.
We ended the hunt at 07:25, I'm happy for today!
How was your day by the way?
