(1969, Jaguar E-type ... The short story – extracts: Described as ‘The most beautiful car ever made’ by Enzo Ferrari, the Jaguar E‑type epitomised the glamour and excitement of the swinging 60s.
Although automotive styling is subjective, Enzo Ferrari was not the only one, who meant this – the Jaguar E-Type simply seemed, back then, to top more opinion polls naming the Jaguar as the most beautiful car in the world.
It was styled mainly by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, with significant input by Sir William Lyons, the car caused a sensation when it was unveiled in 1961. For many, it’s also gone on to become the one car that consistently challenges the MINI as the decade’s automotive icon ... The E‑type kind of defined its generation. It was everything the 60s stood for and became the car of choice for the international jet-set, super models and rock stars alike.
So as London began to swing in the 60s, it also started to echo with the roar of the Jaguar E‑type, quickly cementing its iconic status along with other giants of design, art, music and fashion, like e.g. Beatles etc.
The Jaguar E‑type was once called “the greatest crumpet collector known to man” by America’s Road & Track magazine, and has since become one of the most-loved examples of British car design. The E‑type has been revered right from its inception and changed the performance car landscape forever.
It perfectly encapsulated the feline grace of the Jaguar name ... just look at its impossibly long and elegant bonnet and sleek monocoque design ... the E‑type embodied beautiful form with impressive function in one word: WOW 🐆
