On June 13, 2017, Officer Nathan Miller, with the Jerseyville, IL Police Department, responded with another officer on a burglary alarm at DJ’s Pub and Grill, which was closed. Just as the officers arrived, a man ran out of the building and the chase was on.
During the pursuit, the suspect shot at the officers several times. Officer Miller, and a deputy with the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office, returned fire striking the suspect four times. He was later pronounced dead.
Officer Miller, who has been with the department for 14 years and had been a police officer in St. Louis before that, was transported to St. Louis University Hospital and was in critical but stable condition. Officer Miller was wearing a bullet-resistant vest and was hit several times in the vest. Chief Blackorby states it was imperative that the officer had that vest on and no doubt that it saved his life. However, Officer Miller was also hit in areas the vest did not cover. He is extremely lucky to be alive.
An emergency fund has been set up for Officer Miller: City of Jerseyville Police Benevolent Fund Jerseyville Banking Center P.O. Box 249 Jerseyville, IL. 62052
