What we do at YKA:
You all know @sreoo_em and @ishicomic , regulars on my newsfeed (and in life) But I'm putting this out today- as Sreo became a first time writer on YKA this morning. Our experience over the last few hours aptly describe what it is to write on YKA.
Last evening 22-year-old Sreo texted me asking if there was place on YKA for her to write about the right to dissent and the attack on @Umar_khalid87. I was only too thrilled that she wanted to write and asked her to write ASAP.
We got on a quick phone call to discuss writing on YKA. She told me, not enough people were talking about what happened to Umar Khalid and she feels strongly that more people need to speak up on this.
After our call, she stayed up till past 2AM to write her first draft, which was edited my her mother @ishicomic early this morning. @ishicomic you all know, hosts us frequently for beer, conversations about dissenting in a democracy and feminism.
Less than an hour after Sreo published on YKA this morning, our brilliant editorial team, led today by @juxtoppose processed this piece and made it available for a larger readership to access.
I start the first day of my mini vacation today and had dreamer of sleeping through this morning for 2 weeks now. But I'm currently sleep deprived as I stayed up coordinating this post. But so so SO proud to know a young person like Sreo who wanted to write in solidarity with Umar Khalid, her mother @ishicomic who took the time out to help her edit this morning and our team at YKA who was so committed to putting this out.
So- if you want to write or know somebody who wants to- write. Don't hesitate about whether it is 'good enough'. YKA is open to all and free to publish. If you have queries/concerns - reach out to me and the entire team @youthkiawaaz .We are responsive over mail, Twitter, Insta and Facebook.
As Sreo puts it, if you aren't happy with the system, talk about it. Express your dissent. YKA has space for you.
Before I joined YKA, I only heard about the joy everyone here felt seeing people write on the platform. I can tell you now, the feeling is real.
