So I really wanted to like this one but in the end it did not really do it for me 🤷♀️
The plot sounds intriguing enough. From the Amazon description: "There’s a lot Jean hasn’t said over the years about the crime her husband was suspected of committing. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment. Now her husband is dead, and there’s no reason to stay quiet....The truth—that’s all anyone wants. But the one lesson Jean has learned in the last few years is that she can make people believe anything... "
Sounds totally intriguing, right? Sounds like it's going to be a good read and Jean is going to be a fascinating character, right? But for me, she just wasn't. She was passive to the point of being uninteresting. And this advertised ability to make people believe anything - that I was so interested in - never really materialized at all?? This book could have been great - a husband accused of a horrific crime - an entire nation emotionally involved in the disappearance of a child - the cops unable to prove anything - and then the echoing question of just how much The Widow knows, and when and how she is going to tell her story. But it pretty much just fell flat for me. The book is definitely poorly advertised - it's not a gripping psychological thriller, there aren't a lot of twists, Jean certainly cannot make people believe anything. It could have been just a quieter thriller that was more focused on the secrets between husband and wife - that would have been good too - but it was never really an interesting exploration on that end either.
This book got some great reviews, and I did think it got off to a good start, but it fizzled out and was overall a "meh" read for me.
