So this year for Black History Month I will showcase different individuals that don't fall into the regular batch of individuals that always get showcased. Today I will celebrate Jerome Adams the creator of the Hummer Cocktail who was also a Detroit Native. "Adams was born in Ailey, Ga., the oldest of five siblings. Adams moved to Atlanta and Miami and then back to Ailey in 1961 to work at a local sawmill.
He came to Michigan in 1964 and went to work at Ford Motor Co. According to a 2014 Free Press story, Adams worked in the auto industry for just three years because “he couldn't see spending his life in a factory, so he quit, intending to move nearer to family in New Jersey.
But before he moved, he took a dishwashing job at Bayview, where he planned to stay just a few weeks. He never left. In December 1967, he replaced longtime bartender Curtis Hicks, who was at the yacht club nearly 30 years. Adams explained how the Hummer came about.
