Some very sad news from us here at Whale Watch Kaikoura.
Last Saturday a dead Sperm whale washed up just North of Kaikōura, at Marfall's Beach.
After our Sea Crew and Otago researchers were able to take a good look at his fluke, we can now confirm that the Sperm whale is Kaha, also identified as HL50.
Records show that we had been seeing him in Kaikōura since as early as 2005. We shared an amazing Summer just been with Kaha, regularly watching him breach, tail slap and even chase away other Sperm whales from his territory.
Kaha means strong and courageous, both traits he was known for.
It was an absolute privilege having so many wonderful encounters and getting to share so much time on the water with this beautiful whale. Haere rā Kaha, farewell
His cause of death is still unknown. Local iwi are to bless Kaha, before deciding on a suitable burial site.
