Still breathing! When training to improve physical capacity the focus is usually on increasing breathing rate and the ability to sustain it.
The practice of still breathing or meditation 🧘🏻‍♂️ can have an equally beneficial effect on your ability to perform at high levels! Still breathing exercises are the Yin side to the huff and puff of strength and conditioning protocols ☯️. The intention of these breathing exercises is to gain control and lower your rate of breathing. This has a multitude of healthful and balancing effects that allow your body to adapt to stress of all types more efficiently. The chief mechanism for this is the basic modulation of the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system that low breathing rates have on the body.
There are more meditation/breathing techniques out there than I can even comprehend. The basic mutual goal of each of them is breath control and awareness. A good entry point to start with is to reduce your “breaths per minute”. The average person walks around breathing at about 14-18 breaths per minute which keeps us in a dominance of fight or flight mode from a nervous system perspective.
During your breathing practice it is possible to get your breathing rate down to 4-6 breaths per minute! This leads us more into a dominance of rest and digest mode state of functioning. To function optimally during your day, it is best to have a balance of these two functions vs a dominance! By practicing breath work it is possible to train your body to have this balance consistently. Styrketräning för barn, bra eller dåligt? Vår dotter gjorde marklyft med 12kg när hon va 3år, dvs sin egen kroppsvikt och lite till. På sina egna villkor. Vi har alltid uppmuntrat våra barn att träna med vikter, men nu har de fått sina egna så de ska kunna swinga. För ett litet barn som försöker härma sina föräldrar och swingar med sin kroppsvikt trillar på näsan. Just sayin’ 🙈
