This baby quail was rescued from the clutches of a cat by a neighbor. The folks that found it had no idea what to do with it and my son brought it home to raise care for with his kids. I can’t tell you how many things that boy (who is now a wildlife biologist) brought bedraggled small creatures home to help. For most of his childhood he wanted to run a wildlife rehabilitation facility. (Little known fact about me: I volunteered for a few years back in the 1990’s every Sunday @cwcwildlife just so my then 5 year old could volunteer. He was invited to see a raccoon surgery and we fostered many raccoon orphans. If I’m being totally honest, even though the work was amazing and rewarding (check out their baby barn owl video-one if he highlights were these beautiful birds), I was a tired mama of three little boys and some times it was hard to go care for more little lives on a day that I could have had a tiny bit of down time.) ——————————————————
This little one was lonely and coincidence would have it they had a stuffed quail on hand. It seems to be doing the trick. Send good vibes to this little one who has already made it out of a cats mouth. ——————————————————
If you want to watch what a life long animal advocate is doing with his time. Check out his account @beaverstatewildlife. Where he travels around the PNW working with landowners and municipalities to keep beaver on the landscape. It’s such important work. ——————————————————-

Can you spot the Jaguar in this photo?! This mighty cat is the apex (top) predator in the Amazon, and is a #KeystoneSpecies critical to maintaining the delicate balance in that ecosystem. They are an opportunistic hunter, and a very good swimmer, and because of this have a very diverse diet of about 87 different species including crocodiles or turtles, deer, armadillos, monkeys and lizards amongst others. What this results in is a healthy food chain - particularly around plant destroying herbivores - and ensures no species grows out of control. However, the jaguar needs our help - they are shy, solitary creatures whose home is being destroyed through logging and farming. By protecting jaguars and the places where they live, we’re also helping to look after other wildlife – of which there are a lot of in the Amazon and Pantanal – as well as the people who live and work around there. It’s #pollinatorweek 🐝 About 75% of all plant species need pollinators for reproduction. Here in the U.S., hummingbirds are key in wildflower pollination. Pollinators contribute to a healthy ecosystem and a sustainable food supply. Celebrate them this week and visit www.pollinator.org for more!

"If you assume that there is no hope, you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, that there are opportunities to change things, then there is a possibility that you can contribute to making a better world.”
-Noam Chomsky

Working in the field of conservation biology can be highly frustrating and disappointing. We dedicate our time to gathering data to show the importance of zoning areas, protecting keystone species, changing fishing strategies and overall sustainable development yet we are not the decision makers. The laws and policies must come from above to make a difference... which gets us into politics. How can we show the people in those positions that it’s not a whim from nature lovers to protect our oceans, but a necessity for the balance of our world?
Unless it affects their pockets in a negative way it’s difficult to get them to listen, but that will not deter us. We will continue to fight for our planet until they do. ————— I filmed this video last week at Wolf Island during the Ecological Monitoring Project (Charles Darwin Foundation, Conservation International and the Galápagos National Park) The northern region was, as always, spectacular and full of sharks. I hate to think that the marine sanctuary created in 2016 has been opened again for fishing this year and I hope that after the year is up it will return to its sanctuary status for good.
Let’s hope data collected will serve its purpose. .

This fine looking chap is a Gopher Tortoise. He may not look it, but he is a #KeystoneSpecies and essential for the ecosystem in southeastern US where he lives. Gopher Tortoises are so named because of their ability to dig large, deep burrows. Unusual in tortoises. These burrows can be up to ten feet deep and 40 feet long, and are as wide as the length of the tortoise that made it, and are widely used by other species playing a pivotal role in their native community. As well as cover, these burrows provide a stable temperature and are a critical protector during the naturally occurring wildfires in this environment. It’s been recorded that nearly 400 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects live there, such as the eastern indigo snake, Florida mouse, gopher frog, burrowing owl and gopher cricket. Another aspect of Gopher Tortoise behavior that benefits the native community is how it feeds. The tortoise “prunes” the plants it eats, usually leaving a healthy plant ready to send out new nutritious growth, while the seeds are fertilized and distributed in the scat throughout its home range. What an unsung hero! And well worth protecting (Fact credit @defendersofwildlife / 📷 @wakullaflorida ) #gophertortoise #gophertortoisefacts #tortoise #tortoisefacts #tortoises #reptile #reptilefacts #tortoisesofinstagram #floridawildlife #floridaanimals #northamericananimals #uswildlife #animalfacts #animalfactsforstevo

Coming this fall: MESQUITE: AN ARBOREAL LOVE AFFAIR by Gary Paul Nabhan. Why mesquite? The mesquite tree is an ecological, cultural, and metaphorical keystone species. For millennia, it had been of paramount significance, used over the years as a good source, a traditional medicine, a source of wood (not only for fuel and barbecue chips, but for architects and craftspeople), and a nitrogen-fixing plant that enriched the surrounding soil and “nurses” other species that depend on the tree for survival in an arid landscape. In MESQUITE, Nabhan opens up a hidden world, inviting readers to make time and room for this tree and for the restorative roles it will play in the future of human health and our habitat.

Standing a towering 1.8m tall, the Southern Cassowary stalks the northern Queensland rainforest and is responsible for transporting the seeds of more than 60 plant species around the Cape York Peninsula. A fine example of a #KeystoneSpecies. It is very rare, yet is the only remaining bird that can disperse large seeds in the Australian forests. Losing this bird will mean certain trees won’t be able to spread their seeds, which will affect the species diversity of the forest. So help protect the forests they live in! There is so much happening in this photo. So much we can't see. And so much we don't even understand. Incredible giant trees. Storing carbon. Microscopic ecosystems within microscopic ecosystems. A keystone species within a forest ecosystem within a biome. Everything plays a part. Everything has a purpose. Why should we be any different? Each of us with a purpose. Each with so much happening. So much we can't see. And so much we don't understand.

It’s a new week and a new theme! For the next seven days we’re featuring #keystonespecies - animals who play a critical role in maintaining the ecosystem in which they live. Sea Otters are first up. These cuddly marine mammals play an essential role in keeping sea urchin populations under control, and that helps maintain vast kelp forests. These kelp forests are essential homes for many types sealife including hundreds of fish, an mussel beds, for example. But most of all, those rich kelp forests – enriched by sea otter activity – play a key role in maintaining global environmental health through absorption of billions of kgs of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Without sea otters (in areas where they have been hunted for example) sea urchins have decimated the kelp forests leaving barren sea floors and ultimately damaged the planets ability to cope with rising CO2 levels. According to legend, the last wolf in Scotland was killed by a hunter near Inverness. At the time, extinction was celebrated. But since, it's become clear that the entire ecosystem has been thrown out of balance without this vital species. Now, there are calls to rewild the highlands through the reintroduction of wolves. 🐾
.
After my retreat at @ecoyoga_scotland I'll be headed to @alladalewildernessreserve where they are talking about doing just that. I plan to offer a retreat there next year.

.
And this is a great book, by the way... highly recommend it. 🌱

Wolves play a very important #role in the ecosystems in which they #live. Since #1995, when #wolves were reintroduced to the #American #West, #research has shown that in many places they have helped #revitalize and restore ecosystems. 🐺
They improve #habitat and increase populations of countless species from #birds of prey to #pronghorn, and even #trout.
The presence of wolves #influences the #population and behavior of their #prey, changing the browsing and #foraging #patterns of prey animals and how they move about the #land.
This, in turn, ripples throughout #plant and #animal #communities, often altering the #landscape itself. For this reason wolves are described as a “#keystonespecies,” whose presence is #vital to maintaining the #health, #structure and #balance of #ecosystems. (Tag the artist)

A few more of the alligators seen in the Carolinas. A bunch of them were out enjoying the hot sun and park visitors were enjoying observing the ancient reptiles.
These gators seemed to be quite used to people, and were not as skittish as others that I’ve seen. This is fine, but when they start associating people with food falling from the sky, this can become dangerous for both humans and the gators. Alligators that are accustomed to being fed will usually become very brazen and approach humans, which could lead to dangerous encounters. These individuals are usually either killed or relocated (which could also be a death sentence). Please don’t feed any gators you see, and just observe their quiet yet impressive presence in the southeast waters. #dontfeedthealligators .

Ashwagandha glowing in the garden 🌱🌈 we are traveling for a few days, hoping these little ones can survive the gophers in our absence. The gophers love all the best--tulsi, burdock, Ashwagandha....easy to imagine them happily humming away underground in adaptogenic nirvana. Every time a plant disappears it's sad, but then I remember the beautiful lessons Kate Marianchild's Secrets of the Oak Woodlands: gophers and ground squirrels as architects of the soil, aerating CA's hard summer soils, allowing water + oxygen + nutrients to penetrate to plant roots, providing a home for many other beings such as spider and snakes....and food for the owls + hawks that scream and soar over the garden day and nite
.
.
Looking forward to a bountiful root harvest this fall for honeys + vinegars + maybe even alcohol tinctures. Ashwagandha is a potent adaptogen, allowing body and brain to process stress in less destructive ways. Taken before bed for creative dreaming. Hormone balancer for all bodies. Premier Ayurvedic herb that is easy to grow from seed even in cooler northern climates. A plant that responds beautifully to stress in the garden as well, producing wild + vital medicine

World Ocean Day! There is nothing that salt water will not heal. Tears, sweat and ocean water. What are we doing to heal the Ocean? This collage made by @dfgrama represents the human surrounded by the Ocean and you can see Neptune’s profile on the lip of the wave. The Yoga pose symbolically linked to the Starfish. The starfish is a “Keystone” species, it has the capacity to destroy habitats if it over reproduces, but also maintain’s balance when in the right number. Humans have that same power. We can heal the environment and habitats if we put our intention and actions to it. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the majority of us. We have contributed to the destruction of so many habitats and species. The power is ours to use our 5 limbs and 5 senses in a constructive way. #worldoceanday #keystonespecies #wehavethepowertohealtheearth

A thought for today - "Nature is beautiful. A mystical mystery... One we do not need to solve in our lifetime in order to cherish, protect and honour with complete devotion." L. Sampson

This is a special art piece- acrylic on canvas, Lesley had the honour of naming, 'A Mother's Song'. A personal favourite of ours that depicts the union of complete devotion and love between Mother and Child. Unborn yet already carrying a pulse, heartbeat and connection. The artist, a beautiful gifted mother, Kerri Michalica, captured the essence of the deep bond we have been blessed to observe between Coyote Mother with her pups.

“Good morning! Nice to smell ya! Is there something in my eeeeeeye?” #lilcutie If you notice that there’s something, or two something’s missing, you’re absolutely right. This adolescent female ele in Botswana is without tusks—>and that’s why her cute, saggy mouth looks like that of an old lady’s without her dentures. Just as genetic variances strike us, for example some are born with wisdom teeth and some without, so too are animals. Eles born without tusks occur naturally. However...as poaching levels rise for ele tusks, we’re seeing more and more eles born and mature without tusks. What’s the reason for this? In poaching, obviously the eles targeted and killed are the ones with tusks and ideally the largest tusks. Therefore, recessive genes prompting a no tusk life are being passed down to the next generation. We are watching evolution occur and we are the ones forcing it. If only the strong survive, we are making tusk-less eles the strongest, as they hold no commercial value for us thieves. So, this is one theory and it makes all the sense in the world to my logical brain. But there’s another, more spooky and mystical idea...what if the eles communicate the poaching crisis and are choosing to adapt to the tusk-less life? It’s a stretch, I know. But if you’ve ever been lucky enough to stand humbled before the power and the unspeakable magic that is an elephant, than it may not be so far fetched. We truly know nothing of their inter-workings and their ways, and perhaps if we did, we would be the proper stewards that we should be. #stewardship #conservation #elephant #nomnoms #antipoaching #elephantpoaching #africanwildlifesos #iloveanimals #elephanttusk #photographicsafari #mashatu #botswana #curious #evolution #onlythestrongestsurvive #steward #wildlifephotography #ecotraining #keystonespecies #adolescent #getlosttogetfound #makeadifference #useyourvoice #dogood #beyou #doyou #kateochsmanphotography

As keystone species of African grasslands, elephants feed on tree sprouts and shrubs - this helps to keep the plains open and able to support the other species that inhabit these ecosystems. 🦒🦏🦓🐆🐘🦔
