Some dating back to the Victorian era, one is new, a couple are retro and even mid century, butter pats are among my favorite treasure. It was considered by some to be ostentatious to offer a molded pat of butter (sometimes with a monogram) which was placed precisely and carefully on a miniature plate. But formal Victorians wouldn’t have entertained any other way. Butter pats are ideal for beginning collectors because they’re easy to store, useful and affordable. Interestingly, salesman used to carry them as samples because they were less costly and cumbersome than catalogues. Can you imagine the fun of selecting your wedding china from a suitcase of miniature plates? 😊 .
