Aberfeldy British Middle Distance Championships then... (Half Ironman 70.3)
That was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! (Details of how each stage went below)
This post is going to be in a few parts to cover all the aspects of race day... After starting training only two months ago and with a 2 week gap due to injury and illness I’m over the moon with how the race went. There was a big hiccup and a couple small ones but I achieved what I wanted to a achieve, A FINISH!
The times don’t really bother me as I knew going into it that I was seriously under-trained and it was going to be a struggle, but I gave it my absolute best and it is to date the biggest mental and physical challenge I have ever done! * 4:30am Race Morning - Early start! I had a shower and did a final check over my kit. Packed up the car and ate my breakfast. I was so unsure of what to eat and drink so I had a caffeine gel, 2 Bananas and 2 Alpen Breakfast Bars. On hindsight I should have been having things that give you more energy, an omelette for example... * 5:00am Left hotel - A short 30 minute drive to the Race start * 5:30am Transitions Open - I dropped off my bike and all my kit at T1 and laid it all out how I had practiced my transitions. Walked the transition area from the swim exit to my bike and visualised my transition and exit on the bike. * Moved over to T2 where I would come off my bike and onto the Run section. The same applied I laid out my running kit as I had practiced. Walked the bike entry to my kit, visualised my transition and walked the exit route for the run. * 6:20am Kit up time - I took time to get my tri-suit and wetsuit on about 20 mins before the swim briefing. I made sure to apply loads and loads of body glide to the areas where my wetsuit and tri-suit had rubbed in training. (I had only done 1 open water swim prior to this race 🤦🏼♂️). * 6:40am Swim briefing - Just a short last minute briefing on the safety precautions and which way the course was to be navigated etc etc. * 7:00 RACE START - Scroll to the next post for the race madness!! 🤦🏼♂️👀
