Leadership development has been a focal point of my new business and an area I’ve been passionately vested for nearly thirty years. Best-selling books, graduate coursework, retreats, research, interviews, and personal experience with hundreds of successful leaders over the years continues to build Kynexions’ blueprint for leadership success.
Yet, if I had to point to *one* leadership behavior that I believe had the greatest impact on me, the teams I played on or coached, or in the organizations I’ve worked in, led, or owned, I would suggest it was leadership’s ability to “Set the Table.”
By this, I’m pointing to a leader’s ability to set the vision for his team or organization, chart the course, and engage others in how you’ll steer the ship. Great leaders have a conversation upfront with each team member asking for their involvement and their permission to hold them to the highest of standards—versus telling—and never let excuses cloud their vision or become a crutch to a lack of forward movement. Leaders “Set the Table” by showing their belief in their team, maintaining a strong commitment to the goals and high standards they’ve set, and keeping open lines of communication.
How are you “setting the table” in your organization?
