I've been lifting for about 7 years now and this is the first time I've ever done front squat & hip thrusts. It was definitely a killer workout and I have so much to work on form wise but we all start somewhere 💜.

@tulumjunglegym is the most creative gym I've ever visited, with custom made pieces carved from wood, stone and bamboo. Plus they don't have a dress code so you can work out in your bikini no problem. #sandycheeks 🍑

Of COURSE I had to hit it up and was glad that my gal @megwalsh9 was up for the challenge! After playing around on most of the equipment here's the #barbellcomplex we ended up filming for a little workout:

🔥Back rack side lunges
🔥Back squats
🔥Back rack reverse lunges
🔥Deadlifts
🔥Bent over rows

Try these moves with a light barbell or wooden dowel and progress heavier as you get stronger and more confident with your range of motion. .
Complete 30 seconds of each exercise and move straight into the next. Prioritize form over repetitions. At the end of each round you may set the bar down and rest for 1-2 minutes. Repeat 3-4 times.

Feeling extra sore today after yesterday’s intense pull day. Spent a whole 15 minutes foam rolling and warming up my lower back and hip flexors for squats.
.
It’s essential that you take your time when warming up to prevent injuries especially prior to performing compound movements that involve multiple muscle groups.

Just a couple of clips from last weeks leg session.
Getting the best possible results from leg extensions with @dora_hardaway last week.
we wanted to make sure we were training muscles, not just moving weight around.
We wanted to generate some degree of muscular fatigue in addition to progressive tension so we slowed the negative down to pre exhaust the quads before hitting them hard.
Legs felt like lead after this workout.

Vikki the Beast performing a couple #legday exercises.


•Heel elevated dumbbell squat with adduction- the plates help elevate the heels to keep tension on the quads. The box was added between the knees to better activate her adductors/inner thigh muscles. I don't add this exercise in often because it can stress the knees, but I throw it into the mix occasionally to amp up intensity on the quads. Getting them nice, tight, and defined 💪🏾


•Band-resisted dumbbell deadlift- just a remix to your regular 'ol Romanian deadlift. The band provides more resistance against the glutes when coming up out of the hip hinge. You'll get a nice squeeeeze at the top of the exercise. Your glutes will thank you later 😄

I incorporate these two movements together in the niche style of training that I do BUT you could also use them in a traditional training program on “leg day”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️1. Weighted Curtsy Lunge - AWESOME movement because it focuses on both horizontal and vertical loading. Drive your back leg BACK and to the SIDE. Lean your torso slightly forward.. this will load your Glute Medius
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
▪️2. Skater Hops - these will drive your heart rate up in between sets and work that pre-fatigued Glute Med 🔥
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I perform :40 seconds of Curtsys straight into :40 of Skaters
OR⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you prefer reps and sets, superset 15 Curtsys on each leg with 20 total Skater Hops

💥UNDERSTAND YOUR QUADS💥

Everyone needs strong quads to balance out the crazy amount of hamstring & glute movements that are going on nowadays🕺🏽

The Quadriceps are 4 (obviously) muscles that work together to extend your knee. They join together into one tendon which passes over your kneecap. The Rectus Femoris also helps flex the hip🏃🏽‍♂️

They are a strong muscle group that often gets overly tight & pulls hard on the lonely tendon trying to hold them together at the bottom. Stretching, foam rolling & barbell smashing them will help loosen them up if they are getting tight✅

Putting the majority of your focus on front squats, back squats and lunges when training your quads. The leg press can suffice & a narrower, lower foot position will target them more. Using this tactic or the leg extension machine should mostly be done by people who either are doing bodybuilding & want to isolate their quads or if a health professional has advised them to do so💪🏽

For your average person, squats & lunges will do the trick👌🏽

Need help on how to use the GHR machine?
👇
1⃣ Set up the GHR machine so that when your legs are straight your hip crease lands just over the edge of the pad.
2⃣ Keep your toes parallel and facing straight down, don't let them turn outwards.
3⃣ Reach down towards the ground and use the glutes to pull yourself up, your spinal erectors will be working hard to brace and maintain stiffness in your torso
4⃣ Make sure you are active with your upper back and keep the weight close to you rather than relaxing the arms and shoulders completely.

“I HATE working out my legs!” 😡 ... at least that’s what I used to say until rather recently.

I used to be one of those guys that focused mostly on ‘Big Arms, Big Chest’ 💪🏾 Thankfully my mindset shifted and my approach is different 😏 Now I train legs x2 a week and put up some HEAVY weights doing so.

Landmine single leg RDL.
.
This is my favorite way to load the hip hinge pattern on 1 leg. Using dumbbells or a barbell is often too challenging for most people from a balance perspective.
.
This tool has an extra point of contact and a nice bar path that keeps your form on point so it’s easier to load up and get a solid training effect.
.
✅ How it’s done.
🔹Grab the end of the bar and hold in front of the thigh.
🔹Make a fist with the opposite arm and engage the lat by depressing the shoulder blade. This aids stability.
🔹Slight bend in the knee of the working leg.
🔹Reach back with your heel and allow your torso to fold forward keeping a nice flat back.
🔹Also make sure that your hips are square at all times and don’t rotate.
🔹When you feel a deep hamstring stretch, reverse the motion by tucking your hips.
🔹Repeat for desired reps.

If you’ve been doing bilateral hip hinge movements for a while - give this unilateral variation a try. Make it your primary lift for 3-6 weeks and you will not be disappointed with the results!
