“Let’s be honest here: the media loves clickbait. The more sensationalistic a story, the more clicks and views it gets, and the more money the website makes. It’s really that simple.” .

It’s no secret that people gravitate towards attention-grabbing headlines around nutrition, and the media fully knows this.  Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how messages can be manipulated for the sake of a story…and how food myths are easily created and spread. .

Having body fat does NOT mean you lack of self-control. Just like being thin DOESN'T mean you have self-control. Having body fat indicates one thing: you have body fat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A clinical psychologist and researcher at Duke University School of Medicine published research suggesting that individuals with more body fat experience more discrimination and prejudice, especially women. And that prejudice is driven by the preconceived notion that body fat is somehow optional. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I found even more upsetting in this research was that individuals with more fat who accept their body size, they come off as being a rebel. Because they are violating "cultural norms", they're considered out of control and rebellious. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
People argue that being overfat or overweight is unhealthy and obesity is the cause for all our health issues. But the research is not quite as cut and dried. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We need to expand our cultural norms and stop associating body fat with a false sense of control.

Yes! I see people asking for medical and nutrition advice over social media and unqualified people are more than happy to give it.
Make sure you are going to someone who is actually an expert (check credentials, board certification, etc.) in what you’re seeking, not just someone who found what worked for them and wants to preach it to the world. Professionals likely won’t be able to give personalized advice over the internet anyway, because we operate under a code of ETHICS.

Hey, the claims are seductive and when you’re desperate you’re willing to try anything. Been there, done that! Of course there’s a ton of great information on here it’s just challenging to sift through what’s harmful and what’s helpful.
.
Try to be cautious of:
🚫Restrictive diets - they could provide temporary relief but will likely create even more chaos and distress on the body
🚫People who stand to make a profit off of what they’re saying - obviously not EVERYONE, we all have to make a living right?
🚫People who are not actually qualified to make medical claims
🚫Taking a shit ton of supplements
🚫Claims that sound too good to be true
🚫Detoxes
🚫Cleanses
🚫All organic, non GMO, gluten free, non processed, blah blah blah - this can rapidly develop into orthorexia
**You never have anyone’s full story on here. I spot it literally hundreds of miles away, accounts can seem happy, healthy, energized, though in real life they are sitting in a corner by themselves, head stuck in their phones, no social life, no balance, and lonely AF.
**Some of the biggest (and not so big) fitness accounts share some of the most disordered eating tips. Even if they say they’re recovered from an ED. I’m sure they mean well and probably don’t realize it’s disordered.

Toast has been the breakfast of the week...today featuring the classic PB&B (peanut butter and banana).

Yesterday at work we got into a conversation about types of fats and the terms “good fat” and “bad fat” came up. And I realized there’s a lot of misconceptions out there about fat. So let’s clear some things up.

First off, your body needs fat for all normal, healthy processes. Cholesterol makes up your hormones which tell your body how to function. Body fat is a depiction of safety that lets your body know that it doesn’t have to conserve energy and slow down metabolic and body system processes. Certain vitamins can only be absorbed with eating fat, so by skimping your fat consumption you’re missing out on being fully nourished by the foods you’re eating. And lastly, fat makes food more satisfying and keeps your mind from always thinking about food.

And I can’t talk about fat without addressing this other misconception...that larger bodies people should avoid fat for weight loss. No matter where your body is, no matter its size, the same things apply that I just mentioned. Your body needs dietary fat to feel safe, to produce hormones, to absorb vitamins. It’s not size-discriminatory.

More on this another day, but for now hope you enjoyed this little edu session! Have a wonderful Wednesday!! ✨

How is it that a single number came to dominate our picture of health? We've been led to believe over the years that it's essential to focus on because our health directly depends on it. Whatever number that may be for you, it's important to remember that there are other aspects of health that make a bigger impact on our wellbeing than physical appearance: mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual.

Weight is by no means definitive of your true health. #letsseekthetruth

LET’S TALK SELF-CARE 🙋🏻‍♀️ // What does self-care mean to you? For me, self-care is being kind to yourself and having a good relationship with your body 💁🏻‍♀️💪🏽 ✨
A lot of people define health based on their appearance. But health is also about the little things that aren’t visible, like treating your body with love and compassion 🙌🏼 having a better relationship with ourselves makes it easier to take care of our bodies because ultimately, you gotta help yourself before you can help others! 🙆🏻‍♀️✔️

#letsseekthetruth initiative is about practising self-care and caring for environment at the same time 💁🏻‍♀️ I think it’s an important initiative because we need to mindful of our environment and make sustainable choices 🙄 that’s why I opt for products that are environmentally friendly when I can and keep my self-care routine super simple- two of my fav vegan brands are @sukinskincare and @essano_beauty 💅🏽

My self-care routine involves simple things like lighting a candle, doing my nails, putting on a scrub or mask, moisturising or putting on hand cream (coz I’m lazy like that), going for walks/ exercising, gratitude journaling and writing 📝
How do you practice self-care? Let me know in the comments below 🙃👇🏻

Are we so obsessed with beauty that we'll even discriminate against fruits and veggies? Apparently, yes! 🙈

With an estimated 20-40% of produce rejected because of aesthetics, we're wasting perfectly nutritious fruits and veggies based on their appearance. Do your part in reducing food waste and consider buying less-attractive produce.

Because the inside matters more. Always. #letsseekthetruth

There are unsung heroes amongst us who are working hard every day to keep our food production running smoothly: our friendly pollinators.

With one out of 3 bites of food dependent on the pollinating activities of bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, it's no exaggeration to say that our food crops' future relies on them. And with bee colonies dying at an annual rate of 30%, there are measures we must take to help support our local friends.

Let's do what we can to show appreciation for the 'birds and the bees' that keep us alive. #letsseekthetruth

Let’s talk trail mix. I’ve been #hiking a lot and trail mix is an easy grab-n-go snack that I like to keep stashed in my backpack 🎒
.
The hubs brought me home some store bought stuff the other day and my initial reaction was “oh man, that ingredients list isn’t great”. Cue hydrogenated oils and food colorings galore, but then I quickly reminded myself that it’s just not that big of a deal and we shouldn’t stress about eating “questionable” ingredients from time to time.
.
The reality is there’s a lot of fear around these foods and for most of us, eating these foods on occasion will have no impact on our lives whatsoever. #letsseekthetruth when we decide what food choices to stress over. I ate the store bought last week and this week I’m digging the homemade version, both can fit when you’re using #gentlenutrition and #intuitiveeating 🙌🏻

Not sure how I didn’t hit my 11,000 step goal Monday with my workout in there, but I’ll take a 5-day streak. I upped my goal from 10,000 a few years ago to challenge myself more. With a (mostly) desk job, I don’t hjt it every day but I definitely attempt to. Today I hit it by noon with a 4-mile AM run.

Continuously challenge and push yourself... but don’t beat yourself up on those days you don’t meet your goal. Just keep on keepin’ on. #doyou

In the 4th and final week of the #letsseekthetruth initiative we’re going beyond appearance to look at deeper aspects of health & wellness.
.
What does self-compassion mean to you? In a nutshell, self-compassion is simply giving ourselves the same kindness we would give to others.
.
It can be even more challenging to have a good relationship with yourself if you struggle with chronic illness and pain, an eating disorder, or don’t fit your idealized version of who you “should” be.
.
In these cases, I’d argue cultivating self-compassion practices are crucial for true healing.

This has been my favorite spot to relax since the weather has gotten warmer. It will be two years in September that we bought our first 🏠 and decorating has been really fun. Along with veterinarian, figure skater, and microbiologist, interior designer was on my list of what you want to be when you grow up so I'm loving this process. This got me to thinking about the things we forget or don't do because we are too busy focusing on what we've been told: how to look, act, be.
Think about what you like to do just because you enjoy it. If you can't think of anything it might be time to evaluate what your brain space is being spent on. Is it trying to look like someone else?be or act perfect?
I've been thinking about what I like to do and what I miss that I haven't done in a long time. I've also been getting back into cooking more which got put on the back burner because I was busy and for awhile I was using it as a way to control what I was eating. Now that I'm eating intuitively I have all kinds of ideas for what I truly want to eat and make. Buying/growing ingredients and then making yummy food and sharing it with people makes me happy. I've also kicked up my plant game🌱and have a goal to keep all of them alive and well into the winter because they calm me. So does water, so I need to get to the beach real soon🌊things I want to do this summer: kayak/paddle board, watch the 🌌, relax😎, get into water colors again🎨, pottery, mini golf/arcades.... What have you been doing lately that you enjoy or what is on your to-do list? 👇

On average, over 90% of women are insecure in their bodies and have about 13 negative thoughts a day about their bodies. Why? .

For decades, the diet and beauty industries have targeted and preyed on women, making them believe that 'something' is inadequate...and must be fixed. From ‘flab’ to stretch marks to cellulite, we have been led to believe there’s always a physical attribute that is need of a fix. Luckily, it is in our power to change the perception of inadequacy.

Because a woman's worth is never determined by her physical appearance. #letsseekthetruth

Seafood is a true superfood💪🏼. Unfortunately it can also have a negative impact on our environment🐬. I went from vacation pics chock full of cocktails (and workouts) to a stream of smoothies... the kind of balance that works for me :) Back to one of my favorites this AM with the Mexican Chocolate Smoothie: Cashew Milk | Avocado | Vanilla Protein | Cacao Powder | Ginger Root | Collard Green | Cinnamon | Cayenne | Salt | Thinned with a little H2O | Topped with Hemp Seeds + Cacao Nibs.

Today’s workout was filled with 8 all outs on the tread, 8 on the tower and strength intervals. Even with upping my incline to 2 and 2.5 on the tread all outs, still couldn’t break over 8 splats. I’m just telling myself I’m getting so fit that it’s way tougher to get my HR up.
...
On another note, I treated myself afterwards with my favorite smoothie so far this week - Strawberry Matcha Ginger (so yum!): Cashew Milk | Chia Seeds | Vanilla Protein | Avocado | Strawberries | Lemon | Ginger Root | Matcha Green Tea Powder | Cinnamon | Topped with Hemp + Cacao.

The foods we choose to eat don’t just affect the health of our bodies, it can leave a lasting imprint on the future of our planet. With estimates showing as much as 14.5% of greenhouse emissions coming from livestock, there is a need to change the course of our actions.  The good news is that there are realistic, sustainable solutions that we can implement now. We just need to know, and start, no matter how small the change.

Because debates over diets won't matter if we don't have a home to live in. #letsseekthetruth

What are some unconventional ways that you take care of yourself❓⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When we think of health and wellness, we often first think of nutrition, exercise, and our outward appearance. 🍓🏃🏽‍♀️ (You might be picturing someone with a green smoothie in one hand and a dumbbell in the other. 🥦🏋🏽‍♀️) While I love nutrition and exercise, I think it's important to note that those are just parts of the puzzle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the years, I have learned to have more self-compassion for myself and gratitude for what my body is able to do for me. 💕 In the past, I was obsessed with exercise, eating healthy, and work. (Hello fellow workaholics 👋🏼). However, I've learned that it's important for me to make S P A C E for other things--like laughing with my best friends, reading on my hammock, going on hikes, and time at home with my dog and family. ☺️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I had an epiphany moment this year, right after the holidays. Why do we have so much non-reusable plastic packaging at our place? 🗑️
____
The more I pay attention, the more I was shocked. Food packaging. Beverage containers. Lotion bottles. And...Amazon delivery packaging, anyone? 📦👋
____
Most people think #sustainability and #wellness are 2 totally different topics. But they are all related! Self-care is not just limited to how you take care of yourself, but the environment surrounding you as well 💚
____
This year my goal is to reduce plastic in the house by 1) skipping the green produce bags at supermarkets; 2) bringing our own water bottles & lunch boxes & utensils; and 3) trying to bring our reusable containers for produce like nuts, flour and spices. (For places that offer bulk produce and package free goods, check out the list from @golitterless website!)

Share your tips below 👇 on how you reduce waste at home!

We tend to think of health based on what we can visualize in front of us. Often times, that’s viewed in terms of our own individual appearance. But there are other aspects of health that we don’t directly see and must be more mindful of.

Because good health is, in fact, not defined by your size or any number on the scale: it’s about the relationship you have with yourself, and how your actions impact the rest of the world.
.
We’re moving into our final week of the #letsseekthetruth initiative and shoutout contest. Week 4’s theme is: Go Beyond Appearance, where we will tackle 2 important areas:

1.Self compassion - From foods to self-care, we cannot do the things that keep us healthy without having a better relationship with ourselves.
2.Sustainability - Our choices can have a profound impact on both our personal health, as wellas that of our planet’s.

Join us on this important conversation by following @wellseek @truehealthinitiative @nomadista_nutrition @whitneyerd, tag us, and use hashtag #letsseekthetruth in your caption!

What are some ways that you strive to be more environmentally friendly in your daily life❓ 🌎

I used to use a lot of disposable sandwich and snack bags. I'm sure I'm not alone. 🙋‍♀️ This last year, I've been trying to make a more conscious effort to use reusable straws, to-go containers, @stasherbag, and my @hydroflask waterbottle. 🍽💦🍴(not sponsored, just love these products ☺️)
I've found that I actually save money in the long run, even though some of these seemed pricey initially. 💰 Showing more compassion for the environment has also helped me focus less on myself and more on caring for Mother Earth! 🌿🌏

Do you have any other tips that you have implemented in your own life to show compassion and gratitude towards the environment⁉️ Tell me in the comments👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
