Toast has been the breakfast of the week...today featuring the classic PB&B (peanut butter and banana).

Yesterday at work we got into a conversation about types of fats and the terms “good fat” and “bad fat” came up. And I realized there’s a lot of misconceptions out there about fat. So let’s clear some things up.

First off, your body needs fat for all normal, healthy processes. Cholesterol makes up your hormones which tell your body how to function. Body fat is a depiction of safety that lets your body know that it doesn’t have to conserve energy and slow down metabolic and body system processes. Certain vitamins can only be absorbed with eating fat, so by skimping your fat consumption you’re missing out on being fully nourished by the foods you’re eating. And lastly, fat makes food more satisfying and keeps your mind from always thinking about food.

And I can’t talk about fat without addressing this other misconception...that larger bodies people should avoid fat for weight loss. No matter where your body is, no matter its size, the same things apply that I just mentioned. Your body needs dietary fat to feel safe, to produce hormones, to absorb vitamins. It’s not size-discriminatory.

Whatever number that may be for you, it's important to remember that there are other aspects of health that make a bigger impact on our wellbeing than physical appearance: mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual.

A lot of people define health based on their appearance. But health is also about the little things that aren’t visible, like treating your body with love and compassion 🙌🏼 having a better relationship with ourselves makes it easier to take care of our bodies because ultimately, you gotta help yourself before you can help others! 🙆🏻‍♀️✔️

#letsseekthetruth initiative is about practising self-care and caring for environment at the same time 💁🏻‍♀️ I think it’s an important initiative because we need to mindful of our environment and make sustainable choices 🙄 that’s why I opt for products that are environmentally friendly when I can and keep my self-care routine super simple- two of my fav vegan brands are @sukinskincare and @essano_beauty 💅🏽

My self-care routine involves simple things like lighting a candle, doing my nails, putting on a scrub or mask, moisturising or putting on hand cream (coz I’m lazy like that), going for walks/ exercising, gratitude journaling and writing 📝

There are unsung heroes amongst us who are working hard every day to keep our food production running smoothly: our friendly pollinators.

With one out of 3 bites of food dependent on the pollinating activities of bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, it's no exaggeration to say that our food crops' future relies on them. And with bee colonies dying at an annual rate of 30%, there are measures we must take to help support our local friends.

Let’s talk trail mix. I’ve been #hiking a lot and trail mix is an easy grab-n-go snack that I like to keep stashed in my backpack 🎒

The hubs brought me home some store bought stuff the other day and my initial reaction was “oh man, that ingredients list isn’t great”. Cue hydrogenated oils and food colorings galore, but then I quickly reminded myself that it’s just not that big of a deal and we shouldn’t stress about eating “questionable” ingredients from time to time.

The reality is there’s a lot of fear around these foods and for most of us, eating these foods on occasion will have no impact on our lives whatsoever. #letsseekthetruth when we decide what food choices to stress over. I ate the store bought last week and this week I’m digging the homemade version, both can fit when you’re using #gentlenutrition and #intuitiveeating 🙌🏻

Not sure how I didn’t hit my 11,000 step goal Monday with my workout in there, but I’ll take a 5-day streak. I upped my goal from 10,000 a few years ago to challenge myself more. With a (mostly) desk job, I don’t hjt it every day but I definitely attempt to. Today I hit it by noon with a 4-mile AM run.

Continuously challenge and push yourself... but don’t beat yourself up on those days you don’t meet your goal. Just keep on keepin’ on. #doyou

In the 4th and final week of the #letsseekthetruth initiative we’re going beyond appearance to look at deeper aspects of health & wellness.

What does self-compassion mean to you? In a nutshell, self-compassion is simply giving ourselves the same kindness we would give to others.
.
It can be even more challenging to have a good relationship with yourself if you struggle with chronic illness and pain, an eating disorder, or don’t fit your idealized version of who you “should” be.
.
In these cases, I’d argue cultivating self-compassion practices are crucial for true healing.
.

This has been my favorite spot to relax since the weather has gotten warmer. It will be two years in September that we bought our first 🏠 and decorating has been really fun. Along with veterinarian, figure skater, and microbiologist, interior designer was on my list of what you want to be when you grow up so I'm loving this process. This got me to thinking about the things we forget or don't do because we are too busy focusing on what we've been told: how to look, act, be.
Think about what you like to do just because you enjoy it. If you can't think of anything it might be time to evaluate what your brain space is being spent on. Is it trying to look like someone else?be or act perfect?
I've been thinking about what I like to do and what I miss that I haven't done in a long time. I've also been getting back into cooking more which got put on the back burner because I was busy and for awhile I was using it as a way to control what I was eating. Now that I'm eating intuitively I have all kinds of ideas for what I truly want to eat and make. Buying/growing ingredients and then making yummy food and sharing it with people makes me happy. I've also kicked up my plant game🌱and have a goal to keep all of them alive and well into the winter because they calm me. So does water, so I need to get to the beach real soon🌊things I want to do this summer: kayak/paddle board, watch the 🌌, relax😎, get into water colors again🎨, pottery, mini golf/arcades.... On average, over 90% of women are insecure in their bodies and have about 13 negative thoughts a day about their bodies. Why? .

For decades, the diet and beauty industries have targeted and preyed on women, making them believe that 'something' is inadequate...and must be fixed. What influences your food choices the most❓ I used to think only about my personal health🤔. Then I realized that health is about MUCH MORE 🙌🏼than just what we eat. I started making more sustainable choices 🌎and my whole mindset shifted!

Seafood is a true superfood💪🏼. Unfortunately it can also have a negative impact on our environment🐬. By choosing sustainable seafood products, like smaller, less known fish 🐟 and products that are marine steward certified👌🏽, I practice self-compassion💕 -because I eat what is good for me AND what is sustainable🙏🏻. The foods we choose to eat don’t just affect the health of our bodies, it can leave a lasting imprint on the future of our planet. With estimates showing as much as 14.5% of greenhouse emissions coming from livestock, there is a need to change the course of our actions.  The good news is that there are realistic, sustainable solutions that we can implement now. We just need to know, and start, no matter how small the change.

Today’s workout was filled with 8 all outs on the tread, 8 on the tower and strength intervals. Even with upping my incline to 2 and 2.5 on the tread all outs, still couldn’t break over 8 splats. I’m just telling myself I’m getting so fit that it’s way tougher to get my HR up.

I had an epiphany moment this year, right after the holidays. Why do we have so much non-reusable plastic packaging at our place? 🗑️

The more I pay attention, the more I was shocked. Food packaging. Beverage containers. Lotion bottles. And...Amazon delivery packaging, anyone? 📦👋

Most people think #sustainability and #wellness are 2 totally different topics. But they are all related! Self-care is not just limited to how you take care of yourself, but the environment surrounding you as well 💚

This year my goal is to reduce plastic in the house by 1) skipping the green produce bags at supermarkets; 2) bringing our own water bottles & lunch boxes & utensils; and 3) trying to bring our reusable containers for produce like nuts, flour and spices. We tend to think of health based on what we can visualize in front of us. Often times, that’s viewed in terms of our own individual appearance. But there are other aspects of health that we don’t directly see and must be more mindful of.

I used to use a lot of disposable sandwich and snack bags. I'm sure I'm not alone. 🙋‍♀️ This last year, I've been trying to make a more conscious effort to use reusable straws, to-go containers, @stasherbag, and my @hydroflask waterbottle. 🍽️💦🍴(not sponsored, just love these products ☺️)
I've found that I actually save money in the long run, even though some of these seemed pricey initially. 💰 Showing more compassion for the environment has also helped me focus less on myself and more on caring for Mother Earth! 🌿🌏

Discrimination based on size and appearance has become highly normalized in our society. It even has a negative effect on the way people may seek or receive health care, with evidence showing that social pressures and stress of weight stigma does, in fact, have an impact on physical health.

Let's start shifting the focus back on to health, and the nourishing foods and self-care practices that all people are worthy of receiving, regardless of their size. .

Seriously though, the scale should not be measuring your health and wellness journey 😉

On any given day we can fluctuate 5-20 pounds depending on our body size. This can be due to salt intake, hormones, hydration status, water retaining foods, exercise, and the regularity of your bathroom schedule 💩😂
.
That’s a lot of stuff to consider before standing on that thing and getting upset when you see a higher number than the day before. And let’s be real, when the number goes up our reactions are anything but rational. We blame ourselves for eating too much or simply thinking about eating a cookie, and for what, a water fluctuation or some added muscle from all that exercise you’ve been doing.

So do yourself a favor and stop using the scale to measure your success. It doesn’t even come close to measuring real progress. It’s time we said buh bye 👋🏻 to our scales!

When I worked in Hollywood, I was constantly bombarded with messages about weight and beauty. I was told (and in turn I, unfortunately, helped perpetuate the myth) that there was only one ideal portrait of a woman - a cookie cutter image with features and proportions entirely unattainable by 95% percent of the population.

The fallacy that we were selling was that anyone could look this way - if they simply worked hard enough. “Want a six-pack?” we’d inquire. “All you have to do is follow actress XYZ's simple diet and fitness plan.” It was tantalizing, but it was wrong. See, we can’t all look one way - because we’re not the same. And to try to do so creates unrealistic expectations and often results in detrimental consequences to our health, as the new body image documentary @straightcurvefilm shows us! This week’s #letsseekthetruth initiative theme is “Go Beyond Appearance.” When I left the toxic Hollywood bubble and started focusing on food and movement to feel good as opposed to look good – the result was beneficial both mentally and physically. True health is not a number on a scale or a size of a dress. It’s what comes from listening to your body, loving it, and nourishing it instead of depriving it. A happy, healthy body comes in all shapes and sizes.

When I am in need of a salty snack, Roasted Chickpeas save the day. I used to struggle with cravings A LOT. All of the time. This was mostly due to my highly restrictive diet. I spent most of my time saying no to food, weighing my protein, and obsessively counting my macros and calories. Although my diet seemed picture-perfect, my health was not. I would restrict like crazy and obsess over my next "cheat" meal. Meanwhile, I would be dreaming of all of the "bad" food I "couldn't" have. Since moving away from this (I am still a work in progress), I have shifted my relationship with food significantly. I used to fear that removing all restrictions would mean losing complete control and going on a binge that would never end. What actually happened was that I let go. I let go of my restrictions, and I let go of my obsession with "bad" food - *cue Frozen theme song that will now be stuck in your head for the rest of the week*. At the end of the day, this is about a healthy lifestyle, and ditching my friends, to not be tempted by greasy bar food, or skipping date night to sweat it out on the stairclimber is not sustainable OR healthy. I eat what I want when I want, and despite my fears, 9 times out of 10, what I want is HEALTHY, whole, real, and nourishing food. Fresh fruit, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. Heck, I was CRAVING these crunchy chickpeas. Letting go has taken a long time, and I am still molding my relationship with food, but I can feel the freedom, and it feels good.

Part of my self-care routine is to take some time for myself on Sundays. This helps me to relax, sit with myself, and feel calm heading into the new week ahead. Sometimes I’ll go for a walk, listen to a podcast, read books & magazines, bake, or have a dance party. Whatever it may be, I always make time for a little moment with myself. .

Having time to enjoy my @siggisdairy yogurt (with avocado toast too!) and sipping on coffee with super frothy almond milk has been a big part of my self-care these past few days. The hubs and I are both off of work for our upcoming move to Chicago, so we have been fortunate enough to have extra time to savor these slower mornings together. Having this extra bit of self-care for now has been so impactful for my mood and for getting my day started off to a strong start. I know that this isn’t what my self-care will always look like, but I’m enjoying this part of it while I can 🙏🏻

Self-care doesn’t have to be anything out of the ordinary or expensive. It can be simple (like having breakfast in the AM) or something that you plan/schedule (like going on a walk with your best friend). To people that struggle to sleep well, I feel you 💙 Since my teenage years, I have always struggled with good sleep. Every night is a battle. Every morning is an apprehension. To me, sleep is definitely the ultimate #selfcare and #meditation because having good sleep is really rare 😭

Sleep and well-being goes hand in hand. Sleep deprivation 😴 causes disruption of hormone regulation, hunger/fullness sensitivity and decrease in productivity. That in turns increases more stress in your body...vicious cycle indeed 😱

As I am being #mindful of my sleep time habits, I notice I could do better. This week I set a goal not to read anything from my laptop/tablet/phone at least 20 minutes before bedtime. So far it has been helping me falling asleep faster 🌌💤 ____

The kind of meal that I prepare when pressed for time- Spaghetti with baked organic tofu, and spring mix, edamame salad tossed in lemon, olive oil and garlic. So delish and super easy to make.

I know that spaghetti/pasta gets a bad rep due to its carb content, but that’s not necessarily the case. Besides carbohydrates pasta also contains vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. Especially when you choose whole grain, lentil, garbanzo or quinoa pasta.
As with everything, moderation is key, portion control is important, and adding veggies and protein makes it balanced, fulfilling and most importantly prevents overeating.

Week 3 of the #letsseekthetruth initiative has us talking about how we practice #TLC.
Self-care is about more than diet & exercise, although those are obviously important, too.
The foundation of wellness for me is getting good SLEEP 💤
When my sleep is off for too long, everything else tends to go to 💩
The boring old sleep hygiene rules we hear all the time, like shutting down our 📱 and 💻 at least an hour before bed, stop drinking caffeine 8hrs before bed, and having set bed and wake times really can help if practiced consistently.
Though I’m far from perfect, I’m always working to improve my sleep routine!

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind 💡when you think of 'healthy'? For me, there is more to health than diet 🥗and exercise🏃🏻‍♀️. To me, true health means taking care of myself in ALL ways 🤗 and a huge one of those is REST😴.

Two ice cream-related happenings from today: 1️⃣ My body felt like some higher intensity movement today and it feels best when I fuel that with some intentional snack timing ~1 hr beforehand to support me through the sweat. 😅 I planned on grabbing an applesauce pouch and some trail mix out of my desk for the commute home, but it’s #nursinghomeweek and therefore Carnival Day at my job (I oversee some acute care, subacute care/SNF, and outpatient). So I opted for some crazy colors on some ice cream and sat with my residents after helping do face paint, and it was a snack that worked for my body and my mind because SO MUCH FUN. 2️⃣ I got a lot of comments over my ice cream along the lines of “But aren’t you a dietitian?” and thankfully I’d just finished up part of a CEU from @marcird with mention of modeling IE for other people - so I explained how ice cream is actually a pretty balanced option carbs, protein, and fat and something sweet sounded satisfying, which is my number one criteria for food... which pleasantly surprised many of them! I’m sharing this because it’s fun, but also because sweet @yourhappyhealthyrd2b is running a #ditchthedietchallengr and today happens to include thinking about what your life could look like minus the diet! Today looked like some intentional nutrition with flexibility on what foods I picked, a sweaty plyo circuit because I sat all day and it felt good, and now some tacos because😍. Today, I challenge you to think about what YOUR life would look like sans food rules. Would you eat the same things you do now? Would you spend as much time thinking about food? How would you feel in social food situations? (@gofeedyourself_ has some fab question prompts too + I’m tagging some 💯 RDs/RDs2be to help you start building a HAES IG bubble!)

It’s of popular thought that as long as we work out, we can eat whatever we want. However, the notion of ‘burning off’ what you ate is not a sustainable approach to health.  Rather, let’s steer away from the harsh tug-of-war, and move towards a balanced mindset to stay healthier in the long run.

Movement has looked very different for me as I’ve gone through the various phases of my life. Growing up I played all the sports, was very active, and did dance. In high school I was a 3-sport athlete on state championship winning teams. Freshman year of college I ran varsity track & was training all year round. Once I transferred schools, my movement took a back seat while I focused on getting adjusted, took harder, more intense classes, and tried to figure out what to do with my life. Once I got settled living in PA, I found a fitness studio I loved and was attending classes multiple times a week. Then I moved to NC this summer and I fell into a slump where I didn’t really enjoy my previous forms of movement as much. Right now, as the weather gets warmer and my schedule frees up a bit, I’m loving at home workouts & getting active outdoors as much as possible ☀️ Clearly movement looks very different in different seasons of life, but the main point is find what works for you & your body and make sure it’s something you enjoy! .

While exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, our culture tends to focus on appearance and encourage extremes. No matter where in your movement journey you find yourself, do what brings you joy & makes you feel good! 🦋

When life happens, it can be challenging to exercise for a long stretch of time. That’s when it feels especially demotivating to get back into a routine.
But remember, It’s ok to take it slow and make sure that whatever goals you set are achievable and realistic. Be kind to yourself and remember you’re doing your best, and you’ll be back in your groove in no time. #letsseekthetruth

The Let’s Seek the Truth Initiative continues with Week 2- “Move with Joy!” to spread the truth in this confusing world of wellness culture // one of the biggest things that make my heart ache is when movement, that naturally makes us feel great, is warped into a form punishment and responsibility //

In this picture, I chose running as movement for the day, with both phycial and mental health in mind. I am not running to FIX my body. I had a great running partner @elsitarz84 , it was a gorgeous day outside, I had lots of energy, and above all- I was running for the right reasons- all of which made it #joyfulmovement. When you see exercise posts or exercise regimes, please do not make assumptions. Your needs are different from those posting these regimes. AND you do not know the story behind the picture. Believing you do can be harmful. Remember what I said in yesterday’s post about challenging what you see and hear? Please don’t view this photo and assume I run everyday and that you need to do that! I do not run every day. I actually barely run. I try and seek out activities that I enjoy and that usually defaults to long walks, hikes, and yoga lately...and I do not do these everyday either. To exercise or not to exercise should not be a moral dilemma. If you feel this is currently something you struggle with, feeling guilt for not exercising, I encourage you to give it up for a bit. I did this for about a year and a half and not exercising was one of the healthiest things I did for myself. What I want you to take from this picture is that movement should be joyful...and to notice the big smile on my face…because that is what I want exercise to bring to you...a HUGE SMILE 🙃
