I don't know if the letters
I write with tears make verses,
thinking that, in my sweet Borinquen,
this beautiful bit of the homeland (perhaps from a dream
like hollow shadow)
the gentle hope of the colono
is lost among shadows and between bitter waves.
- Luis Muñoz Rivera
As a Puerto Rican, it pains me to see the struggle that fellow Puerto Ricans are facing on the island. They have had their resources either sucked dry or taken away from them for another's profit. They have no choice but to depend on the US government for survival (which was the US's intention). And now that they are in need, the government has shown that it is not willing to sacrifice its resources for the benefit of these citizens.
The US has continued to treat Puerto Ricans unfairly and have passed laws that have negatively impacted them. As a colony, although they have a representative, they are unable to vote on laws that affect them.
And that's why the hopes and dreams of the Puerto Rican people will remain lost among the shadows of their limited rights and between the bitter waves of being a colonized people. America should understand that better than anyone. ---
Borinquen, I hope one day that gentle hope is realized.
