On my way in to Panera Bread today to enjoy a delicious and overpriced soup and sandwich (a Cuban and Tomato Soup, thanks for asking), I went to hold a door open for a lady coming out as I was going in (bear in mind I was in my scrubs). She said "O no! Come on in. You're just used to helping people!" I told her I just like being nice and told her to have a good day.
You see, my husband does this thing where he always stops and gets doors, coming or going, for people of any age, young or old. He will wait while multiple groups pass if he needs to. So I do it too. I go out of my way to stop and hold doors.
Her comment got me thinking. ...I've worked in customer service for about half my life, currently at a gyn practice. I AM used to helping people, but what a good thing to have ingrained in you. I don't do it because I have to, I do it because I want to. It's funny how a small interaction got me thinking so much today. I just like helping people.
