LIVE BY NIGHT is a fine film, but will never be great. Ben Affleck directing is a gift to cinema in my opinion. The problem with this particular movie is that it aims high as an homage to American Gangster classics, but the characters are thin and learn way too much, way too fast. Instead of just letting the audience love it’s criminal characters, shoved down our throats are these good men just trying to make a living. The movie disguises it’s main characters as criminals but none of them are really that bad. There is a scene at the climax of the film where my wife and I literally laughed out loud. I sound a bit contradicting. It’s good, but not worthy to be praised.
P.S. I can’t 100% prove it, but I think this is a prequel to The Town. I can’t prove it, but I’m almost certain of it.
P.P.S. I need to address how annoying it is that ever since Batfleck, DC fanboys have hopped on to Ben’s bandwagon to love any and every work Affleck puts out. Calm down, he’s been directing great work long before his entrance into the DCU.
P.P.P.S Batman v Superman is a terrible movie. #livebynight
