The liver is an absolutely incredible organ of the body!
The livers function is to filter the blood and clear excess hormones, pollutants, chemicals, metabolise pharmaceuticals and drugs.
Not only that, the liver produces bile that ends up in the intestines, makes proteins for blood clotting, is involved in the production of vitamin D from sunlight, production of cholesterol, coverts excess glucose into glycogen for storage, storage of iron and other nutrients and resisting infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream.
Now is the time that people start talking about detoxing the liver with spring being here.
But you do not need to do a hard core detox, the liver responds to more subtle cleanses also!
You can start by increasing your green leafy vegetables (think kale, spinach, silverbeet) and bitter foods such as rocket, radicchio, celery, radish leaves, dandelion greens and chamomile tea.
You can also start your mornings with 1/2 a lemon squeezed into warm water (don’t forget to rinse your mouth afterwards). I have written a post regarding whether you need a liver detox or not, the link is in the bio.
If you feel like your liver has been overloaded or you want to give it some support, please be in touch as herbal medicine and particular supplements can be of benefit.
