Ghost sign for Gillette razors, and Andrew's Restaurant, Gray's Inn Road.
Andrew's is one of London's oldest and best "greasy spoon" cafes, much-loved by locals, lawyers, workmen and workers from the nearby ITN building. It's the place to come for a proper fry-up, and to spot Channel 4 newsreaders having their lunch. .
I worked locally for 18 years and this was a regular Friday lunch haunt for half the office. I haven't been back in 2 1/2 years, and was delighted to see nothing had changed at all, from decor to staff to prices. That's part of the appeal of the traditional English "caff" - if you suddenly have a craving for a full English breakfast at 2pm, or beans on toast (always white), or spotted dick and custard, or a fried egg sandwich, or liver and bacon, or an omelette the size of your head, or a roast chicken dinner on a Wednesday afternoon, you know you can always get them here. .
Andrew's has been a local institution for decades, having been established before the war. The current owners are Turkish, and have run Andrew's for nearly 15 years. A couple of years ago, developers tried to tear down the block to build luxury flats, which would have destroyed many small, independent businesses, but fortunately it did not go ahead.
