Most people attribute tight hips to their lower back pain. When this occurs people stretch the living hell outta their hips and the pain might dissipate briefly but it will usually come back. This is because the hips might not be the source of discomfort or pain. Excessive forward lean of the neck and exaggerated rounding of the shoulders and upper back (often referred to as kyphosis) could be the cause of your low back pain, so hip stretch won’t cut it. What causes this condition? Some people are born with it, however, it can also be developed by overtraining chest and traps and under training your mid back. keep in mind that having kyphosis doesn’t automatically mean that you’ll have back pain, but if you’re a gym goer with over active traps or a gym bro who loves doing shrugs. How you should sleep to correct your posture 😴

Try to sleep in a position that helps you maintain the curve in your lower back. We recommend lying on your back with a pillow under your knees (if more comfortable) or on your side with your knees slightly bent. It is preferable to not sleep on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest (the foetal position).

Sleeping without pillows will help your back extend, and you will rest in a natural position without any consequences or aches. On the other hand, using a thick pillow or even stacking more pillows underneath your head and neck will deform your position of the spine and induce pain in your back.

Is it better to sleep on left or right side?

Choosing to sleep on your right side or left side can make a difference to several health conditions. Left side sleeping is beneficial if you have acid reflux. Acid reflux is worse when people lie on their right side.

Sleeping on your left side relieves pressure from your liver and allows blood to flow more freely, making it a better option than others. If you are pregnant, sleeping on your left side is important because it improves circulation to your baby and also relieves pressure from the liver pressing on the uterus.

There is a phrase which the West has monopolized on which I must admit, Malawi has shown me not to be the biggest believer of its outcome. Women empowerment. A phrase that boasts hope and power and conviction; to those already filled with a sense of hope and power and conviction.
What I have come to realize is that empowering someone first begins with an understanding of worth and value within your core. If that does not exist, you cannot empower. So in a culture such as where I am, we need to ask ourselves; does a woman see her worth outside a husband? Outside her families opinions? Outside of being a mother? Very minimally. And that is not a negative thing (once we understand the why behind it) but than we must look at the hope or empowering we want to instill and use the avenues available to reach the outcome.
I bring this up as this week we are preparing our next community training to prevent low back pain on what is our most controversial topic culturally; chairs. Sitting. The right of a woman to sit on a chair equally to a man. It sounds so archaic and preposterous but in the understanding of value and worth it is extremely sensitive (to both sides) and valid. We cannot make progress in these areas without instilling a conviction in the man. What I mean is that a man does not see a woman as invaluable by the way she sits or moves because he is aware of her individual worth. Once there is an understanding to her health and well being; they will encourage the women in this small act. But currently; the woman is not aware of her worth alone. So there is a fear to make the change on her own accord. First comes the need to instill an understanding of worth in one small scenario which can lead to a sense of hope and conviction for her own desires and needs. From there... let's see what she pursues next!

30 Days of Low Back pain.

Day 4: Hip Mobility & Low Back Pain.

If people have hip mobility restrictions, their low back may compensate to make up for the lack of hip motion. Now. If the low back compensates, that means more motion and stress at the low back. More stress = greater risk of injury.
.
A good example can be seen in golfers.
🏌️‍♂️📖.
Vad et al., (2004) showed that professional golfers with a history of low back pain had a loss of hip internal rotation on their lead hip, whereas golfers without a history of low back pain didn't present with a loss of hip internal rotation. A loss of hip internal rotation may limit a golfer to get "into" their hip on a swing.

The takeaway.
.
Less motion at one joint means another will make up for it.
.
Loss of hip mobility = more motion at the low back. Not ideal if we're looking to spare the low back.
.
There are many ways we can work on improving hip mobility restrictions. Some may involve self-massage techniques such as foam rolling. Other may involve stretching or stability drills. Whatever the goal is, getting the hips to move spares the low back.

Do you suffer from stiff neck and back pains? Read a few tips below of how you should sleep!

No matter what position you lie in, the pillow should be under your head, but not your shoulders, and should be a thickness that allows your head to be in a normal position. 🔹Try to sleep in a position that helps you maintain the curve in your back (such as on your back with a pillow under your knees or a lumbar roll under your lower back, or on your side with your knees slightly bent). Do not sleep on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest. You may want to avoid sleeping on your stomach, especially on a saggy mattress, since this can cause back strain and can be uncomfortable for your neck. 🔹Select a firm mattress and box spring set that does not sag. If necessary, place a board under your mattress. You can also place the mattress on the floor temporarily if necessary. If you've always slept on a soft surface, it may be more painful to change to a hard surface. Take the time to find the right mattress and box spring for your needs. 🔹Try using a back support (lumbar support) at night to make you more comfortable. A rolled sheet or towel tied around your waist may be helpful. 🔹When standing up from the lying position, turn on your side, draw up both knees and swing your legs on the side of the bed. Sit up by pushing yourself up with your hands. Avoid bending forward at your waist.

These recommendations will benefit most people who have back pain. If any of these guidelines causes an increase of pain or the spreading of pain to the legs, stop the activity and seek the advice of a physician, chiropractor or physical therapist.

Are you having pain With your deadlifts or worse yet just sitting at your desk all day?

You may want to incorporate some lumbar extension into your daily routine

Our spines are meant to extend as well as flex but we tend to neglect moving into end range extension throughout our day
.
Working with thousands of lower back issues I can confidently say that 80% of my patients respond positively to extension. Is this the only factor that got them better. Absolutely NOT! Low back pain. Is multifactorial and requires a comprehensive treatment Plan BUT if I had to pick a direction of movement to try that I know has the most bang for its buck it would be press ups or lumbar extension

Give both of these variations a try and see how it feels

Movement is ALWAYS the answer but Introducing it at the right time when sensitivity is high is just as important

Which would you rather put in your body? (Asking without judgement.) 🤗

The left side is an ultra-processed attempt to recreate meat, loaded with questionable ingredients like canola oil. It also contains very little nutritional value other than protein which comes from the pea protein isolate.

The right side is organic, 100% grass fed beef. It contains protein but is also loaded with vitamin B12, vitamin E, heme iron, creatine, zinc, omega-3 and 6 fats, and others.
.
Personally I would pick the right side any day, and I’d completely avoid the left side, but I understand that people have different views on this topic. From the standpoint of nutrition, however, it seems pretty clear which is the winner.

This is Pete. Pete had chronic low back pain.
