If you know me, you know I’m a competitive person 😅 I’ve always looked up to my guy @mm_drew as someone I aspire to be like, in more ways than one. Due to that, I have always tried to compete with him and challenge myself to get closer and closer to his level. While I still have a LONG ways to go (he played in the NFL after all lol), I stepped up to the plate in today’s @metabolicmeltdown and swung up two blue KBs for the reverse lunges. I never would have even tried that in a workout if he didn’t do it first. Do you follow up your mobility/stretching session with strength training? Or do you use it as a method of cool-down?🤓

The fitness industry has ingrained in us the idea that every training session should follow the same set-up: a warm-up to get the blood flowing (i.e. jogging, cykling, rowing etc), strength training (usually divided into subcategories such as ”leg day”, ”shoulder day” etc), and a cool-down. This is usually where most of us do a half-hearted attempt at working on flexibility, usually via static stretching🏃‍♀️
. . .
The problem with this is that focus lies mainly on increasing flexibility, not MOBILITY (which is the sum of flexibility + adequate strength to be able to MAINTAIN any increases in range of motion). Think about it - after stretching, one seldom works through the newly-attained range of motion, meaning that the muscle is never really worked to end-range🤸‍♂️

The result is that the muscles will return back to their pre-stretched condition, tightening back up only to have to be stretched out and loosened up again. This, in turn, may impact how well a muscle can contract and produce power. In basic terms, the greater the range of motion that one is actively able to control, the greater the amount of force that can be produced🏋️️‍♂️

Isometric exercises are a superb way of building strength and stability directly following mobility work - preferably as close to end-range as possible, or to where one’s max strength allows. This helps to ”prime” the correct motor pathways throughout the range of motion, thereby activating muscle fibers to their fullest potential💪

The split squat hold is one such exercise. Here, the hip flexors, quads, glutes, hamstrings and even calf muscles are dynamically lengthened and strengthened. This is especially important for runners and those participating in sports, as well as for those looking to increase their gains in overall strength. An added bonus is the challenge of balance and core control⛹️‍♂️

🔹Assume a lunge position, spine neutral and abdominals engaged. Press pads of toes + all toes and heel of front foot down and into floor, lifting arch between.

Instead of thinking about doing something, just do it. You'll find out later if it was worth it or not. I think I focus on my legs more then I do my upper body. If you feel yourself repeating yourself. Try doing something different. Something you don't normally do. It doesn't have to be difficult but it has to be something. Focus on your goals instead of how you feel about putting in the work.
