Maintenance calories are the starting point for any diet...but what does it mean?! And how do you calculate them?
If you google maintenance calorie calculators your will get hundreds of options...remember they are all estimates!
Here is the (very) simple calculation for maintenance calories I mention:
14-16 x bodyweight (in pounds)
Use 14 if you're fairly inactive, 15 if you're active, 16 if you're very active.
Remember this is just a starting point and is by no means exact...if you want to lose weight, use the number you calculate, reduce it by 5-10%, track your food and changes to your body and then adjust and repeat.
