Demian ‘6x Muay Thai Champion’ Maia
After suffering back to back defeats, Demian took a three week notice to come in against the Nigerian Nightmare Dikeme Mutumbo. Im sorry I mean Kamaru OSSman
To pull off his outstanding BJJ game, Demian must be able to take the fight to the ground, otherwise all of his BJJ training pretty much means nothing. The better the wrestler, the harder it is to be able to do that. After suffering his last two defeats, Demian should have realized that he would be better choosing opponents that do not have wrestling backgrounds. Wrestlers often put themselves in positions that could lead them to be submitted, which I’m sure Demian was thinking, but that is only if they are going for the takedown. Kamaru is a smart fighter and he knew better than to do that with a python like Maia.
I’m sure Demian was training prior to getting the fight notice, and was probably in great shape, but he shouldn’t have taken another short notice fight. No one other than fighters are in a position to tell Demian what to do or what he should have done with his training, but how different would this fight have been if his training camp was 5 weeks? Or maybe even 8 weeks?
With people like Maia and Jacare, one takedown is all it takes for the fight to be over, or at least for the tide of the fight to change. There was a point early in the fight where Demian had a good position on Kamaru slightly behind him, and was starting to slowly wear him out, but as Maia started punching Kamaru’s ass the referee quickly separated them. That might seem like a funny thing but there is a sweet spot on the hip that hurts like hell if you even press hard on it, let alone punch it. Unfortunately, the longer the fight goes, the more blood and sweat is on the opponents, which means the harder it is to grip them ;)
Kamaru said he’s done calling out opponents and made his claim for the title shot. A fight with Tyron and Kamaru would be very interesting. But while we’re here why not talk about the state of the welterweight division.
Tyron’s last title defense against Maia was over 10 months ago, so the UFC has decided to create an interim belt in this weight class as they
