Philip and Daniel Berrigan were brothers, US American peace activists and Roman Catholic priests. They always get a good shout out from @brothercornelwest every time he talks about the Vietnam war and/or catholicism. I first heard about him in West’s essay which I’ve recommended several times, “The crisis of Christian Identity in America” (I can get you a link to a pdf scan of it, or it’s in the book “democracy matters”) The center for prophetic imagination / Mark Van Steenwyk is one of the most compelling and interesting movements I’ve come across lately. Based in Minnesota — follow him @propheticimagination ..... and the transcendentalist connection: “Why do we always crucify Christ, excommunicate Luther and Copernicus, pronounce Washington and Franklin rebels?” - Henry David Thoreau in “on civil disobedience”
Another modern day transcendentalist Natalie Wynn : “In 1517 that SJW Martin Luther pinned his 95 theses on the door of Wittenberg...” - @contrapoints

I took this photo of a hallway at the Ryman as I was just feeling so thankful to be able to roam the halls that so many talented musicians roamed, and even pondered the reality that people of my skin color weren’t always welcomed there... which of course this wasn’t told as part of the official history of the auditorium, but it really goes without saying concerning the racial climate in which it was built during.

Standing there made me think of the many doors of opportunity that present themselves to us that those who went before us may not have had. I wondered if they watch us in awe of the progress that has been made and I also wonder if they cringe at our lack of gratitude for what we do have. I wonder if Martin Luther King watches us and, though thankful for racial equality advances that have been made, feels frustration for ways we have squandered some of our influence that he worked so hard for us to get. I just wonder.

My point to all this is that we are presented many opportunities and chances to expand on the work that many put in before us and I feel it’s our duty to not let their passion and efforts go to waste because without it we truly would not be where we are today. So in whatever way you can, honor those that went before you by taking chances, taking more opportunities given to you, and by approaching life with enthusiasm... because life, progress, and the chance to pursue our dreams is a privilege not a right... and I never want to forget that.
