The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Bowers.
This book is a treat to read! If you need a break from the news or if you, like me, enjoy reading dark thrillers and mysteries, this is such a nice nerdy break! This story follows a young woman who comes to the actual island of Guernsey and follows true events of Nazi occupation of a British island between England and France. An unlikely group of people band together and form a family of their own to get through the war together. I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 stars because it is well written, paced, and discusses important historical events.

"Why did a roast-pig dinner have to be kept a secret? How could a pig cause you to begin a literary society? And, most pressing of all, what is a potato peel pie?"
All booksellers should read this book. Within the first 20 pages there is a love letter to all book shops and booksellers that reminds us why we decided to work in the book industry in the first place.
The whole novel is told through letters, telegrams and notes between the characters. It's beautifully written and just the right length. Any longer and the style would become annoying rather than charming.
The plot revolves around Juliet, a journalist in the post-war 1940s, who becomes friends with a literary society on the island of Guernsey. It's sweet and light but still touches on the darkness of the WWII occupation that Guernsey endured. .
I learnt a lot from this novel and fell in love with its characters. especially Isola who is wonderfully quirky! And I think everyone has wanted to throw someone out of their house, with the style that Juliet does Markham. V. Reynolds, junior. .

#theguernseyliteraryandpotatopeelpiesociety #asociedadeliterariaeatortadecascadebatata #maryannshafferandanniebarrows #readabook #bookstagram

Dzień dobry! 🌱 Lubicie ekranizacje książek ? Jaka jest Wasz ulubiona ? ☺️ U mnie ostatnio pierwsze miejsce zajmuje film „Stowarzyszenie miłośników literatury i placka z kartoflanych obierków” 💗 Przeuroczy film! Główna bohaterka Juliet Ashton jest młodą pisarką, poznajemy ją, gdy kobieta objeżdża Anglię promując swoją książkę i zarazem szukając pomysłu do następnej. Powołali je podczas wojny rolnicy i gospodynie, by uratować kilka osób przed aresztowaniem.

Olvastam én erről a könyvről korábban jót is, rosszat is.

Salut Booksta’ 😊 !

“I love seeing the bookshops and meeting the booksellers-- booksellers really are a special breed. No one in their right mind would take up clerking in a bookstore for the salary, and no one in his right mind would want to own one-- the margin of profit is too small. So, it has to be a love of readers and reading that makes them do it-- along with first dibs on the new books.” ― Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrow, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Ok ok I’ll admit, I saw the movie first. And I’m the first to say, I’m almost positive it changed my perception of the book. The movie is one of my absolute favorite @netflix releases and I think I’ve seen it a solid 5 times now.

So naturally, I had to read the book next. I still absolutely love this post-WWII landscape and the incredible, dynamic characters and storylines. This love story is one far beyond that of romance, it’s also about the love of friendship, loyalty and family.

I think what I disliked most about the book was actually the format. The entire book is written in letters between each character. But I think in doing that, you miss so much of the raw emotion that comes in the moment vs that which could be portrayed in a letter after the fact. It also means you never actually get to see characters interact, just hear about it.
All in all, the story is incredible and I think I would have given it 5 stars if only the format had been different. Unfortunately, I think this is one of those rare occurrences where I much prefer the movie.

Who’s read it? Let me know if you agree or if you preferred the book!

Book📘: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Authors✒ : Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Page Count: 250

I only just completed this wonderful book and I'm left with a bag full of conflicting emotions!
Written by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an epistolary novel on the protagonist Juliet Ashton, an English writer hit with a writer's block. It's her journey to the Channel Island of Guernsey in a quest to seek inspiration to write a book on the days of the German Occupation of the Island and the lives of the islanders during that time.

The language of the book is a fast gripper and its smoothness of narrative, with different letter writers, gives a bird's eye view of the story in the most compelling, un-putdownable way! The most striking quality of the narrative is, that it never came out as a monotous string of letters. The emotions portrayed really do strike a chord with the reader; it did for me.

The story of the islanders' life during the Second World War and the brutal scenes of the Nazi concentration camps linked to the characters in the book are heart-wrenching and powerful. The books, while taking the protagonist to the island and telling us of her experiences and interactions there, her invocation as well as culmination of personal conflicts, ends on an sweet romantic note. You'll be happy with the end, although you might be left a little confused regarding a few arcs and some of your queries might remain unanswered, like mine. Nevertheless, the book is a delightful read and I can picture myself getting back to it on a mellow day!

To live is the rarest thing in the world,to live for others in the most horrifying situation is the bravest.Being brave isn't only about fighting for others when they suffer but it is equally brave to raise the daughter of this valiant woman who lost her life saving others.Since it's a book about books, the centre of this book one might think is the heroine whose finds people to share her love for books but it is about a woman whose stories brought them all together.

It is about Elizabeth McKenna, whose bravery in time of despair founded the Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society. When the Islanders were under the occupation of germans during world War II & they lost their freedom & sense of community, on one occasion, they all get together for a rare feast when after breaking the curfew they were about to arrest, that's when it sprang up in the oddest situation.

This is an epistolary novel (a novel written in the series of letters & notes), where Juliet Ashton (a writer) starts a correspondence with Dawsey Adams (an islander) when he finds her address written on the book he loved.

In exchange of letters Juliet come to know of this strange but appealing society where ordinary people talks about how books have affected them, how they become their only source of light in dark days. How books saved their life & brought different lonely people together.

This book has its emotional depth when talking about the horrific incidents of world War II while holding on to faith & maintaining a lightness in tone which makes it a fun read.
You will gush for Dawsey Adams. It's one of those wonderful light read with deep thoughts in a package that is deceptively simple, which I will suggest everyone to read, to know how books have the power to change your life.
Though the movie is much different from the book but still it is adapted wonderfully, since the ending in the book is bit rushed owing to the writer's ill health which led to her eventual death & her niece completed the book. In that case movie did complete justice to the book adding memorable quotes & made the end enchanting.

QOFD- If you were to inherit 8 letters from an author, who you want that to be from?
