Why would you do the ketogenic diet in world with waffles?
If you're not familiar with keto, it's basically when you just cut all carbs. I know what you're thinking, "Wow that must suck". But it must be better for weight loss, right?
Well, it's complicated - if you equate calories, keto isn't superior to a normal high carb diet. So if someone eats 1800 calories on a keto diet, they will lose the same amount of fat as if they ate 1800 calories on a high carb diet.
Not yet. Keto is MUCH more effective at suppressing hunger. So in your daily life, it's going to be much easier to eat less calories in the first place.
This is why people can often just hop on a keto diet and lose weight without even trying to decrease their calories. It's just easier to eat less when you're on a keto diet.
This is for 3 main reasons:
1. Swapping out carbs for fat will keep you full for much longer.
2. Cutting out sugar/carbs will decrease the palatability of your food. In other words, your food will taste like shit. Well not that bad, but carbs tend to lead to cravings more than fat does (there's only so much peanut butter you can eat bruh c'mon)
3. Ketones suppress ghrelin (one of the hormones involved in hunger).
Cool, so if you're trying to eat less calories, keto can sound like a godsend. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. I know it sounds silly, but not eating foods like waffles can really get to you.
You have to constantly saying no to food at every social outing, and get all your friends to worry about making food options available to you. It's kind of like being a vegan, except you don't get the smug satisfaction of announcing that you're saving the planet.
So keto is a valuable tool to have in your toolbox. That being said, none of my clients are on keto because I haven't seen a situation where I think it's going to be a better long term option than a diet that includes carbs.
