I'm sure most of us have learned this the hard way and there are those of us who choose not to believe it. Though we can create a situation for others to experience what we are going through it doesn't guarantee they will allow themselves to see our perspective. What I've learned is that sometimes it is more beneficial for me to understand my opposition be it an enemy, an opponent, or just a friend I'm having a discussion with. If I can put myself in their shoes I'm better able to process what they're going through and it's likely that I can find a way to better attack the situation and help them understand my perspective or at the very least it reduces some of the irritation and anger I feel that clouds my judgement. I'm sure most of you understand how narrowly focused we get when we're angry and are unable to see all of our options at times.

1 year later (compare with pics below)... I am so grateful to be alive and to have been able to dominate my athletic performances. Though my ankle's range of motion is not completely there, I can do 95% of my workouts.

If I had not been involved in sport/clinical psychology during the time of my accident, I would not be able to recover as fast and well. Finally, without the support of my classmates, I would be in much deeper (internal) pain.

Injuries, life changing ones, can really alter your whole being in a blink of an eye. Always remember where you came from and those who were there for you. Know that in a greater scale of things, your existence means something. -

Last night was all about perspective with @notredamewh boys hockey team. Finding positive ways to interpret and look at difficult situations can help you find enjoyment in your sport and be more resilient. For example, instead of seeing pressure as an extra stressor, see it as a good sign that you are where you want to be. You don’t get to feel pressure if there are no expectations on your performance. You don’t get to feel pressure if you didn’t work hard to prepare and be where you are today. Pressure is earned through hard work. Pressure puts you in a position of power. Pressure is a privilege not everyone gets to experience.

Sometimes I think the practice of gratitude gets misjudged as being “soft.” However, science tells us time & time again that practicing gratitude is actually a key ingredient to developing resilience, & resilience is an important part of mental toughness. Research findings show us that people who intentionally practice gratitude perceive challenges as less threatening—they are able to find (& appreciate) the lessons in hardships and are grateful for their experiences. As a result, they are reporting higher levels of satisfaction and are less susceptible to burnout.

I’m incredibly grateful to be a part of an organization that not only understands the importance of gratitude, but prioritizes it, discusses it, and practices it.
.
Find a friend, a colleague, a teammate, or a spouse and start by asking each other, “what is one thing you are grateful for today and why?” Keep it up & you’ll be amazed at how it challenges your perspective to intentionally seek out the positive things in your environment.

Competitive anxiety is real amongst a lot of athletes who may think otherwise. The first step is to admit or be aware (there’s that word again) of what makes you nervous...this is transferable, you get anxiety before games, a class presentation, a test, etc. learn how to control it in one area and it transfers to all. Periodization for Sport Psychology is a rare topic and for a fair reason. However, the mind and body are one. Understanding physiologically and neurologically whats going during athletic performances or exercise may help tie in the psychological element.

It's really easy to be distracted and run through your workout with lighter weights without feeling any benefit but if done correctly (ie., breathing each rep, focus on tension, and tempo) will allow you to enhance your focus or 'mind to muscle connection'. It's the same concept with meditation. We focus to our best ability, naturally loose focus, become aware and gentley bring back it back to breathing.

Whether you are an athlete or non athlete, an adult or not you get stressed! It is that part of life that we try to ignore in hopes of it going away, but it needs our full attention, or it will eat you away slowly. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
With that being said, here’s a road map that will help you get started...
1. Assess the cause: you have to build awareness (there’s that word again) and understand what is causing the stress. Is a big test coming up, are you having a hard time at home, is the biggest game of your season approaching...
2. Analyze your response: How do you respond to the stress, do you get angry at everyone around you, do you speak badly about yourself, do you indulge in guilty pleasure, etc...
3. Add an intervention: Your stressor will determine how you handle it, emotion and problem focused coping are different and will not work with all of your stressors... 4. Apply the intervention: after you’ve built awareness now it’s time to apply the intervention and regain control of yourself!

A humdinger of a quote for you today from the great Eric Cantona on his former manager that will give your Football-mad kid the reminder they may need: "Sir Alex Ferguson was the master of one thing: Whenever we took the pitch for a match, after hours and hours of work, we were allowed to be free . We felt total freedom to move where we wanted, to play how we wanted. "I could tolerate football no other way. "What is football if it is not about freedom?" Does this mean that Ferguson let his players do what they want?

Of course not.

But he knew that the right preparation must be followed by trust in the players to go out there and play...to do their thing.

We see this sometimes with young players... They come into an Academy environment and go from learning nothing to learning everything.

They can get paralysis by analysis. Especially if their parents are 'in their ear' all the way home n the car about this and that they did wrong... We even see it at our Academy... And when we realise players are overthinking we always enourage them to 'go ot and play'...'show us what you can do'... It's like learning for an exam...when the whistle blows you either know what to do in each situation or you don't.

So just let it all out.

If you get stuck...that's for next week's training session or team meeting.

Otherwise, enjoy it. Savour it. Play.

I was always interested that in Brazilian Football culture they do not talk about 'work'...they talk about 'play'. 'Play well' 'Play hard'

With this language they are reminded that it is a game.

I got to 'play' with and help a young youth player while I was at Swannsea city who became a vctim of his own over-thinking... He'd gone over a season without scoring and he was a Striker.

After 4 sessions with me he bannged in one from 30 years.

Then 4 in the next game.

Got plenty for the remainder of the season.

Who knows how far he could have gone if he could have learned to 'play' instead of 'think' and work'
