Gymnastics is not for the faint of heart! I’ve recently been working with a lot of gymnasts lately and I find it so unbelievable how tough the athletes are! It is an incredibly unforgiving and demanding sport. Working with gymnast to master their minds is nothing but an extreme joy!

#TBT 2014 with stud safety Jordan Simone @jordansimone38 taken after we (AZ State) beat Duke to win the Sun Bowl. Simone played great D and had a great fumble recovery that he returned 29 yds and almost got the house! He’s now rocking it as a sideline reporter. ➡️They can provide Psychology support and skills to any sport no matter what the gender, age, culture, disability or nationality

➡️Can provide life skills (e.g. organisation and determination), which you can take into sport and further afield

➡️They are caring and empathic individuals who are excellent at rapport building. This enables them to understand the individual and/or team to get the best possible working relationship. Therefore, the Psychologist can tailor their practice so that the individial/team can excel in the mental side of their game.

➡️They can improve the mind-set of coaches so that they are less susceptible to stress, improving their cognitive functioning and as result making them more mentally skilled

This is just a few great strings to a Sport Psychologists' bow. The mental side to sport is essential for optimal performance. I think any athlete or sports team out there should take advantage of what the practitioner can offer. It could make the difference between winning and losing, coming 3rd or 1st. They are a fantastic fit for working alongside Coaches, Nutritionists, Sport Scientists and Physiotherapists. This means the whole mind and body is focused on, which gets the best results🧠💪

Spent a very meaningful Tuesday teaching physiotherapists-to-be at The HK Polytechnic University on incorporating mental skills to traditional physical therapeutic methods to aid the rehabilitation process of treating injured athletes. We also tried playing boccia with Asian Para Games 2018 gold medalist Karen Kwong too!

ABC OF MENTAL SKILLS

If you want to swim fast, you’ve got to prepare yourself mentally. That’s not always an easy process.

Why do I have anxiety?

Many athletes have anxiety before they compete, whether it's a pounding heart, difficulty breathing, tight muscles, or worried thoughts. All animals have what's called the fight-or-flight response in which our bodies prepare to either fight a challenge or to run away from it. These symptoms of anxiety aren't always bad, as they can signal a readiness to compete. Think of a race you were involved in that wasn't important to you or where you knew you would win it easily. You probably didn't have the same signs of anxiety because you didn't see this event as being as threatening. The perception of a challenge/threat is what makes athletes feel anxious.

Changing the Perceived Threat

If situational factors (event importance, your opponents) cause you anxiety, focus on controllable factors that help you to swim well- a smooth stroke, a strong kick, and a well-timed start. When you start to add “uncontrollables” to your focus, you are adding thoughts to your head that don't need to be there and are making it a lot harder to swim to your potential.

Physically Relaxing

To release anxiety, take some long, deep breaths and picture all the physical and mental stress leaving your body. You can also take a few minutes each day to go through your muscle groups, tightening them and then relaxing them. By doing this progressive relaxation, you can recognize when and where you are carrying physical tension and learn to physically loosen your muscles so that you can perform your best.

Therefore

Anxiety as you know it doesn't have to exist. You may have some physical activation (faster heart rate, quicker breathing) but you can control this. Simply think how you want to think and leave some time for a pre-race routine that allows you to physically relax. While it requires training, you can regain control of your body by taking control of your mind. #mentalskills

Had a great conversation tonight with some of the @ctjuniorrangers about the emotions they experience in hockey. While some people are quick to label emotions good and bad, we discussed how all emotions can drive us in the right direction if we perceive them and use them effectively. Sports are emotional! You’ll experience frustration, disappointment, and nerves as much as joy, excitement, and pride. Let your emotions fuel your play rather than overpowering and distracting from it.
