Here's the good news and bad news about modern life, both personal and professional.
The good news is we are done with rules like relationship and career commitment. We are free to define our relationships and jobs with no judgment from ourselves or those we value. This is great, it means the chains holding us back from fulfilment are off and we can forge ahead on life's journey as more of an adventure than a package holiday.
The bad news is that now without rules we find it hard to know where we are, if it was worth getting here and where do we go next. So its no surprise FOMO has replaced the older fear of not living up to expectations or time honoured views of success. We used to not want to let others down now the fear is letting ourselves down, guilt is still a huge motivator. Today's journey of life is a dichotomy of celebrating freedom and not knowing what to do with it.
The past was about just that, keeping the past alive, reliving it over and over again to justify and glorify tradition. Technology has destroyed that idea, an idea that to many of us, never made sense at all. Get a good education, get one life partner, get a house to live in, get a good job, get insurance, get some kids, get them to a good school and bring them up to repeat the cycle - with what ever respect is due, surly there is a better way.
Life is like a long drive with no objective. Everyone says "live in the moment", and I am like, what the hell does that mean. But when I was driving, when I was on the road driving for days with no clear objective or guides or plans, then I was living in the moment. I had too or there would have been a wreck, I looked around, listened to music, chatted and joked and never stressed about the past or the future, just kept the car steady and enjoyed every second of the journey. And that's life isn't it.
