This week = emotional roller coaster (think 😃🙁😩😭) but I finally feel like I'm in a place where I can share ... For those who don't know, this is Josie, my other weenie dog 🐶 You don't see her as much as Daxx because she usually stays with my mom (her choice, not mine 😜) Well, her vet diagnosed her with diabetes on Tuesday, which according to him, was fatal because it would be too hard to manage (insulin 2x day), be very expensive and she would basically be miserable the rest of her life. He said he wouldn't make his dog live like that and suggested we just put her down THAT NIGHT!
To say I was distraught would be an understatement. I've had her since she was 8 weeks old and we've shared so much of our lives together that it just broke my heart thinking of a world without her. So, after I pulled myself together, I decided to get a second opinion with Daxx's vet. Turns out, Daxx's vet has been treating diabetic dogs for YEARS. After seeing her blood work, he could not believe Josie's vet wanted to put her down. He said her levels are typical of a newly diabetic dog (400s) and nothing so alarming as to warrant putting her down. He also said her cataracts wasn't nearly as bad as the other vet made it seem and he thought she may not even have it at all.
We've been on insulin since Wednesday. Yes, insulin just like humans take. And I say "we" because I have to give her two shots a day. She's such a sweet and kind girl that given her the shots seems to be harder on me than it is her. I think she also may realize they make her feel better too. We go back next week to see if the dosage is where it needs to be.
I'll keep you updated about how things are going. Maybe next time in a blog post since this ended up being THE longest post in Facebook history 🤣#dachshund #longhaireddachshund #minidachshund #dogswithdiabetes #dachshundwithdiabetes
