I had such a great weekend with this inquisitive and totally engaged group of yoga and Pilates teachers, acupuncturists, body workers and movement educators. .
One of my favorite things about teaching is what I get to learn from my student’s questions about the material I present. This group had so many brilliant questions and creative ideas over the course of 2 days, it was hard to believe how fast our 12 hours together flew by.

Okay, hip abduction, round two! ⚡️

Passive vs active range:

In the top photo, I am engaging my core to keep my pelvis/low back stable (to ensure I’m not compensating) and then using my hand to lift the leg up into abduction. This is my *passive* range of motion. The action is coming from my arm stretching my leg into position.

In the bottom photo, I am again keeping my back/pelvis stable, but now I am actively lifting the leg as high as possible. This is my *active* range of motion.

There's a pretty big difference, right? I have lots of passive range (super stretchy), but not enough active control. So in yoga, as soon as I reach my limit of *active* range, something ELSE has to do the work to get me into those wide abduction postures.

Now, WHY do we need to give a shit about this? 🤨

👉🏻Without active control over our stretchiness, we are basically lacking some of the body's important emergency safety features.👈🏻

Like, we wouldn't drive a car without brakes. We also wouldn't feel great about boarding a plane flown by a blindfolded pilot.

But when we get ourselves into really stretchy poses without the ability to actively control that range of motion, we ARE flying blind, and our bodies don't have the necessary information to get ourselves out of trouble if need be.

The other issue of lacking control over our range is that we can develop poor movement patterns that put a lot of strain into the parts of the body that have to constantly pitch in and help out. Remember: the body is lazy. It will use what it has to do the things you ask it to do.

So yeah. Active vs Passive. It's pretty crucial! 🙌🏻

In the next post, I'll show you one way to work on gaining more active control through your hip abduction range.

(Please note: There's a LOT that goes into hip abduction [and every other aspect of mobility training for that matter!]. The body is mother fucking complicated. What I'm showing you here is just one small piece of the magnificent movement puzzle 🤸🏻‍♀️)

I wrestle with this question all the time, especially as a teacher. I crave achievement and put an unreasonable amount of value on my accomplishments. Did I find enlightenment when I was able to hold Handstand? No, in fact the opposite happened. I felt Handstand wasn’t enough and wanted to learn how to take Adho Mukha Vrikshasana in Padmasana. In yoga, there is always somewhere else to go if you train yourself to think that way, and it can become relentless. ...

This photo was taken several months ago, and when the photo was taken, all I remember feeling was absolute joy in my body and in the pose. I didn’t care that I couldn’t drop into Urdhva Dhanurasana, or that my backbend wasn’t perfect, and that is why I love this photo so much. Something has shifted in my own practice since then, and I feel like I have to always take things to the “next level”, whatever that actually means.

In class we are going to not work to find our edge, but rather work to find whatever we need to feel satisfied in our bodies and in our practice. We are all so different, and look for different things in our practices, and I want to honor that the best I can this week. So be grateful - not because you can hold Handstand, but because you choose to roll out your mat and move and breathe, and train, and experience your body and all the wonderful things it can do to you. #Yoga is NOT pretty. Just like in life you sweat, you fall, you pick yourself back up, you hurt, your awkward, and snot accidentally comes out your nose 😂
Then there's a moment where you nail a #handstand and quickly take a photo and it looks f#cking cool. You upload it to #Instagram so everyone can see how "cool" you are...
Little do they know you struggle just like everyone else, the only difference is you are constantly growing because you practice yoga. It's not pretty unlike this "cool" photo 😁😁😎😎

Open source yoga. Community and collaborative learning is so much more effective than hierarchical teaching structures. As a teacher, I find that encouraging questions always leads to beautiful insights and deeper learning for everyone, including myself. This has been proven to me time and time again in my workshops and trainings, and teaching this weekend in Vancouver, it’s beautiful to witness.

I know that I don’t have all the answers (no one does) and that actually frees me up to be more curious, to invite that curiosity for others which then creates that open source learning experience. As we continue to redefine aspects of yoga (keeping it a living tradition) this is one aspect that I feel passionate about. I don’t want to encourage dogma or guru teaching relationships. Everyone has value. Everyone’s experience matters. And when we come from that place, that’s where the magic happens ✨
