IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY.
Even when you think it's about the thing itself, it's not - it's about the process of getting there.
I say that because I decided to surprise my girls with High Tea at the @brownpalace in downtown Denver today.
Told them over breakfast and their faces lit up. They've never done anything like it before.
We cleaned ourselves up, laid out clothes and jewelry, trimmed nails. Chatted about what it would be like, curling one kids hair while the other shouted over the shower. Dragged out the tea length dress I wore before my wedding over a decade ago, as they ooohed and ahhhed. Finished up with some joyful begging for nail polish and clear lip gloss to add fanciness.
Soon enough, there we were in a stately room, classical piano in the background, proper place settings and tiered trays of pastries and their own selection of tea. Awestruck faces in hushed conversation, we sipped and nibbled and just like that, it was time to go home - where they collapsed onto the sofa. After all, it's hard work being fancy!
Fast forward to dinner, and the usual question of "what's the best part of your day" comes up.
I assume it was the tea.
I was wrong.
They both loved getting *ready* for the tea. The anticipation, the conversation, the preparation. The togetherness.
I am so glad I was present today in that time of preparation, fully with them in mind and body, chatting and laughing along as we got all fancied up.
It's not always like that; I'm not always like that. Texts, calls, to do lists, boredom. So easy to check out.
But today, by sheer luck I was present, and afterwards, I was reminded by my little loves that moments are precious. That seemingly insignificant time before our event is what stood out to my children - the time spent together, getting ready for an adventure. Not the adventure itself.
Who knew. They know. I'm learning.
