I quit coffee cold turkey shortly after I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2006. My GI tract needed all the help it could get, if you know what I mean. 🙄 I was cranky, I mean really cranky, and exhausted, (plus I was mid flare up) for a few weeks and then I finally turned a corner and I adjusted to a caffeine-free lifestyle. I didn’t touch caffeine for 6 years.
And then I became a mama. And then I moved overseas where incredible coffee was the norm. And then, and then, and then... it’s been almost 5 years.
I don’t drink nearly as much as I used to, I’ve learned how to shop for the best quality beans for me and the environment, and those AWFUL styrofoam containers are definitely not making an appearance anymore, but it is time for me to listen to my body. I’m not in a flare, but I know I’m not doing my body any favors right now with regular caffeine and I’m out of excuses for why I “need” it.
What are your favorite caffeine-free warm beverages? I’m starting with decaf, but just as a transition. I don’t have any expectations or rules, just listening to my body and seeing where it takes me.
