“There’s is no greater threat to the critics
And cynics and fearmongers
Than those of us who are willing to fall
Because we have learned to rise.
With skinned knees and bruised hearts,
We choose owning our stories of struggle
Over hiding, over hustling,
When we deny our stories, they define us.
When we run from struggle, we are never free.
So we turn toward truth and look it in the eye.“
//Brené Brown- Rising Strong
A true freedom in my life came when I was ready to accept Luca’s disability and embrace the future ahead of us. My denial of what was happening right before my eyes held us both captive in a place where neither of us could grow. My turnaround point was when he started school and was placed in a special education class. I couldn’t deny it anymore- he needed special help and he needed ME to do what I’ve been trained (born) to do. I can’t take even 1/3 of the credit, though. With the support of his teachers, he has blossomed. He has done the things I feared he wouldn’t do because I stopped being afraid he wouldn’t do them and started providing him with what he needed to thrive. We can’t run from reality; our struggle will chase us and it will always win. We have to accept, embrace, push forward, and rise. We have to show up to our lives, whatever our lives may be. We don’t get to choose the cards but we do get to choose how we play them. #saturdaynightlucatalk
