Here’s some #mondaymotivation from my mom.
This photo was taken this past May after hiking all day to reach Machu Picchu. Not only did she do this trek already in her mid-60’s, but in Feb of this year she slipped on ice and broke her ankle. Most people might assume there’d be no chance she’d be able to go hiking only 3 months later, but my mom was determined, and we had a goal. She was patient in letting her foot rest, because her years working as an occupational therapist had taught her you couldn’t rush healing, and as soon as she was able she began to train w/ a physical therapist. She began with a mile on a treadmill, got to a mile walk outside, then 3, then 5, and finally 14 miles the week before our trip. She finished the 3 days of hiking 8-10 mile days feeling better than ever, all because she went slow & steady, and believed in herself. .
Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed with the enormity of something, I hope you’ll take some inspiration from my mom. Remember, we can all easily achieve great things with small, consistent steps. .
Side note: We traveled w/ @evolutiontreksperu, an ethical tourism company based out of Cusco. Their founder Miguel is from Cusco, lived for years in Oakland (Bay Area represent!), and they are a worker-own company that puts their employees first. They’re the first tour company in Peru to train female porters, they ensure equal pay, they restrict the amount of weight porters can carry, and ensure all support staff on a trek get the same food and accommodation as the tourists. You’d be surprised how poorly some tour companies treat the very people most crucial to your experience. I can’t recommend them more!
