Sensory overload... it can be very tough to deal with. Tough to recognise too. Because, what is sensory overload, and what is a temper tantrum? There is a difference. Sensory overload happens when you get too much sensory input. A temper tantrum can be for example when you don’t get what you want and it frustrates you.
Sensory overload is different for everyone, so it can have different ‘symptoms’ too. The most common are: • Not being able to handle input to your senses anymore (touch/smell/noise).
• Having physical reactions (like stomach aches, head aches).
• Because you can’t handle any sensory input, when you do get it you can react very annoyed/agitated, even mad at times.
What to do when you feel like this? It’s usually best to not get a lot of sensory input. Find some place quiet, calm, preferably a bit dark and do something that helps you relax and calm down. Like reading a book. It could also help to go for a walk in nature. -
