Should you take your dog across Crib Goch? Quick answer: "Probably not. Unless...". For those of you that don't know it, Crib Goch is a ridge on Snowdon. Whilst it's not technical, it's very exposed, particularly on the north-facing side.
I'm going to be blogging about this soon, but I'd be keen to hear your comments/questions about adventuring with dogs.
My own philosophy is to treat my dog the same as I would a very young child. I am 100%, unequivocally, absolutely responsible for their safety and happiness. And it's my moral duty to only involve them in adventures that they want to take part in. I would never dream of asking Loki to do anything that she didn't feel comfortable with, just as I have no intention of ever dragging a toddler into a situation where they feel unsafe. I’d also go to the same lengths to rescue Loki as I would a child, if anything did go wrong. And I keep this in mind when planning trips and packing for them.
I also base any decisions on prior experience. Loki grew up around climbing crags, and I feel safer with her around edges than I do most people that I've spent time in the outdoors with. More about all of this in the upcoming blog, but I just wanted to make it very clear that I take safety extremely seriously, which is why my answer to the question at the top of this post is still, "Probably not". So, with that said... We took Loki over Crib Goch at new year 😄 We had dreamlike conditions - a crisp, sunny day, with absolutely no wind, and never a single threat of a raindrop. It was a fantastic experience, but there are still things I'd do differently next time.
