What Is A Sustainable Diet?!?! ☘☘☘ Good question 🤓 It is a HOT TOPIC right now, as awareness grows about the pressures our beautiful planet is under from our rapidly expanding global population, & how that population currently lives, both in the developed & developing worlds. One of my modules in college is called One Health - all about how human, animal & environmental health is 100% inter-connected. It's FASCINATING. 😍
☘I chose to write my essay for this module on Sustainable Diets. Which, as my lecturer said, are 'ways we can eat to make sure there's enough left for the lads in the future' 🤣 The United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation has a very comprehensive consensus definition - but essentially, a sustainable diet is felt to be one that optimises both human & environmental health now & for the future. .
☘There's been a LOT of headline in the media this year about greenhouse gas emissions (esp. from meat & dairy production), food waste, plastic pollution, overfishing, wildlife species exploitation, climate change - PHEW. Not ideal, is it?
Does that mean we all need to go vegan today? No. Of course not. That's not a feasible, fair or culturally acceptable solution for us to recommend. Many MANY individual & environmental (social/cultural) factors affect our food choices, & the influences & motives of one person are totally different to the next. The bubble of social media means we often forget real issues not talked about enough - food security & access for ALL social classes, food affordability, knowledge & skills needed around food, for example. .
☘BUT. In this Friday's post, I will share what I think we CAN do to shift our current dietary patterns to a more sustainable one. Worldwide, we have a double whammy burden of overweight/obesity & malnutrition. Our food systems need to address both 💪 The science is still ongoing & the evidence base is forming. But after joining a fantastic webinar last week held by @bda_dietitians on Sustainable Diets (ahead of their Toolkit launch this week) & my own essay research, I felt inspired to share learning with you all. So stay tuned for Friday! 🙊And I would love to hear your thoughts on this 👌
