The Sam Houston mural in Brenham, Texas was created during the 2016 Texas Arts & Music Festival. Painted by Texan artist Tra Slaughter on the wall of the Back Lot Gallery, it is a depiction of Texas forefather Sam Houston.
Mr. Houston was baptized in nearby Independence, Texas and his third wife, Margaret, lived in Independence until her death. Sam Houston lived with the Cherokee during his youth and was known as “Raven.” His second wife, Tiana Rogers, was the daughter of a Cherokee Chief. White society objected to the marriage because he was technically married to his first wife, Eliza, who he had separated from after only eleven weeks of marriage. Tiana declined to go with him when he went to Texas, remarried, and died a few years later from pneumonia.
Sam Houston is most known for being an important leader of the Texas Revolution, serving as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas. Houston was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He is the only American to be elected as governor of two states, serving as both the seventh governor of Texas and sixth of Tennessee. #southernreverie #texasartsandmusicfestival
