Happy 5-year anniversary to me and Adam (@jejunco)!! We spent the day birding around Naka-karuizawa, where we saw Mandarin Ducks (!!!!!), Japanese Green Pheasants, Brown Dippers, Eurasian Nuthatches, Japanese Grosbeaks, Bramblings, Japanese Wagtails, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Pygmy Woodpeckers, Long-tailed Tits, Japanese Tits... and musasabi! Japanese Giant Flying Squirrels! We saw one in the daytime poking their sleepy head out of their nest box, and then at dusk I led Adam to the site I visited last year on a guided tour. We got to see one musasabi emerge from a nest box, climb up to the very top of a tree, glide (“like someone dropped a pillowcase,” Adam said) way down to the bottom of another tree, climb up to the very top of that tree, and glide to another tree.
I’m so glad Adam and I were able to share so many amazing experiences in Japan over the past couple weeks, and that we’ve been able to spend the last five years together. As they say in Japan, “Lucky!!!” #japan #anniversary #queer #birding #birders #mandarinducks #musasabi #flyingsquirrel #picchio #karuizawa
