You know what bothers me the most about the prequels? It’s not the clunky dialogue or the how we meet Anakin and find out what a whiny, temperamental murderer he was even before he became Darth Vader. It’s not how we meet the cool Boba Fett as a kid and watch him watch his father die and be sad. No. It’s the de-empowerment of Padmé.
She starts off in the story barely a teenager and is the battle queen of Naboo. At 14, she made peace with the Gungans, the first ever, and united their forces with hers to take back the palace and Naboo. She fought alongside her soldiers and ultimately disrupted the plans of one of the galaxy’s most powerful and skillful Sith Lords.
So we go from this kickass girl, barely old enough to be considered a woman, physically, to hiding her relationship and marriage and eventually her pregnancy (the whole thing about her not knowing she was carrying twins bugs the hell out of me as well. A privately owned medical droid or loyal midwife would have been able to tell her. Did she not get any prenatal care in order to protect Ani?)
She just gives up the will to live because Ani’s gone bad? (She was okay with him slaughtering the Tuskens - not just the men but the women and children, too.) She has two babies that the Empire and their father would want to acquire and twist into instruments of destruction, that need her protection and guidance, and she is so depowered she just………….. dies. -
