Trust. One word. So damn hard to do.

Acro for me is a CONSTANT test of my lack of trust in myself and other people. It sends my control freak mind into overdrive as I try to allow myself to give over control of my body to another person. Actually allow someone else to move me, support me, balance me. .
I never realised how much I controlled everything until I finally found someone I began to trust enough to give over some control. To not fight and balance myself. To just breathe and trust that they’ve got me. It’s the most scary thing I’ve done in Acro, when in the most simplistic trick. But when you finally give over, and hit that spot of calm. Stop fighting and allow yourself to just be, it’s the most beautiful place to be. .
.
So for day 2 of #acroyogajoy I bring you balance in many different ways in my favourite balancing posture #needle. It’s something I like to practice on hands, on feet, backwards, frontwards. But mostly I like to practice it on this man @ishine_gape, building more trust every time. .

Straddle Splits... Box Splits...
Pancake Splits...

We are always told that we need to use long holds in our stretching techniques. And I agree - but sometimes holding a frog in the centre of the room is just not accessible. And more importantly - when your body is uncomfortable in a long hold stretch it tends to tense making it harder to lengthen, which means your unlikely to see much progress in your flexibility. The key to long hold stretches is to relax the body as MUCH as possible -
And that’s where my favourite things PROPS come in. .
.
As you can see in each of these three long hold poses I’ve used something to take some of the strain from my body. .
.
.
Swipe across for a mini hip opening flow (remember to repeat both sides as I’ve only shown one) and use a wall and props where you want to modify each pose in the video! .
.
1) Malasana - lean your back against the wall to begin with. As you become more comfortable in this pose you can love to the centre of the room (and I do recommend this over time to build more strength with your flexibility). This allows your hips to relax enough to gain flexibility and gradually grow deeper in your stretch.
.
.
2. Frog stretch reclined - this is for those people that find doing Frog super hard. Try lying down in front of the wall and opening your knees into frog. Allow your feet to rest on the wall, again taking the strain out of the pose and allowing your hips to open gradually and without tension. .
3. Frog with a bolster - so you hate doing frog because it hurts your knees? It’s painful? Use a bolster/pillow/blanket underneath your legs to allow you to “sink” into the posture rather then tensing and feeling uncomfortable. This will allow you to hold the posture for a longer time reaping maximal benefits from the yin posture. .

Post work out playtime .. 🙌🏼 .

Yesterday I did one of my first callisthenics (esc) workouts in the park. Over the month I’ve been trying to incorporate different stabilising movement trainings into my practice. I’ve begun to see my movement practice like a toolbox - trying to gain as many different “tools” or movement methods as possible so I can then choose which ones I feel would help me every day. And honestly? I’ve really enjoyed exploring the way the body moves and strengthens outside of a traditional yoga practice, and then bringing those stabilising qualities into my time on my mat. I even did my first unassisted pull-up this month (which for anyone that knows me - this is a BIG achievement 🤣 )

Callisthenics, functional movement, climbing, primal movements, weight training - though i don’t agree with everything in each practice - I truly believe that each type of movement can bring us something new in our body. A healthy body is a balanced body and for me I’m learning this means doing a variety of different movements and training in a variety of different ways. .

However - when faced with these bars post leg workout I couldn’t resist some stretching and monkey time 🐒 😆 . I still can’t stop laughing at the guys putting me to shame with their pull-ups 🤣 .

Breathe and stop.
Feel your heart beating the pulse of breath that flows within your blood.
Your life energy, strong and vibrant beneath your skin.

Let your mind rest from the constant flurry of thought.
Conscious, unconscious.
Fast, slow.
Let it still, find silence in a moment of peaceful nothing where you can be and only be. .
Stop and breathe.
Feel the rise and fall of your chest.
Quiet your racing mind from the upset or excitement that clouds your thoughts.
Let your eyes take in the wonderment that surrounds you. Sounds which would otherwise be drowned out by the ever talkative mind, dropping into your ears as you fall into the sound bath of the world around. .
Stop and breathe.
Find yourself and allow yourself to be found. .
Breathe through your joy, contentment. Sorrow and discomfort. Anger and hurt. Know that wherever you are it’s okay. Let our fear go and surrender into the abyss of our mind.
The deep pool of our hearts.
The strength in our center. .
Breathe.
Stop.
And know that you’re safe.

I have a hard time giving over control to other people with things in my life, and yet all I want a lot of the time is to give away all my responsibility (does anyone else have this?!) .
I love watching cheesy old school sitcoms over breakfast.

I’ve missed many stops on the tube because I’ve been absorbed in a book I’ve been reading. .

Every problem in my life is made better when I’m hugged by someone I love. .

Sometimes I get so angry I cry. .
Sometimes I get so frustrated I cry. .
Sometimes I get so upset I cry. .
Sometimes I am so happy I cry. .
Sometimes I just cry. And that’s okay. .

I struggled to fully accept myself. I struggle to fully accept myself. But I’m on a long journey to a place where I know I’ll learn to fully love myself and everything I am and every day I take one step closer.

S T R E N G T H | Day 5

Side plank done right strengthens the core, arm, wrist, legs,- pretty much the whole body.
However, I think real strength is not about muscles, but a type of emotional strength which comes from the inside.

It’s that ability we have to cope with the ups and downs in life, to stand up again after we get knocked down, to find another reason to move forward. If you are of faith, to have hope anchored in God.

Building emotional strength and resilience is an ongoing process, and it takes practice and dicipline. Look for things to be thankful for daily, take a quiet time to reflect, be present, focus your mind on what is important, and the rest becomes less overwhelming.

Strong is being able to push through when things gets hard.

Show up in the right way, with the right intention and an open-minded attitude. You'll discover that you’re already stronger than you think.

Each day you learn a little something new.
Each day you need a little something different.
Each day you change; grow; step back; step forward. .
This life is a journey, a constant movement forward and backwards, sideways and up and down. It’s waves and undulations, straight journeys and scenic routes. Every wrong turn or “bad decision” I look back on knowing I learnt something and moved forward. Every argument, misinterpretation or negative experience taught me something about myself, others and life. .
So today filled with inspiration in the Austrian mountains I’m extremely thankful for how much life has given me, bad and good, because without every experience I wouldn’t be who I am. And no matter who I will be in 10 or 50 years, I’ll still be grateful for every step I’ve taken and glad I’ve walked whatever road I chose. .

Splits on my right side have always been easy. The patience part definitely comes on my left side. My left hamstring and right hip flexor are tighter. But, with some slow work, I have been able to get down (barely) on the left. Everything in life seems to take patience, yoga just helps us deal with the frustration and ego. -

G E T T I N G O L D E R | Day 6

We cant change how old we are, but we can influence how we feel about it.

With age comes patience, wisdom and a deeper spirituality. I worry less about keeping up, attaining pose goals, and focus more on being present, enjoying the journey day by day.

Youth is not your last chance to contribute so do not limit your experience by believing that all possibility has passed with the passing of time. Birthdays are a reminder that we were brought into this world to participate in it, to be part of a bigger purpose.

One thing I know for sure, I feel much more stronger, flexible, and confident now in my 40+ then when I was in my youth - physically and mentally. Never too old or too young to start working on yourself. Never too old to start learning. Never to old to transform or to start over.

Aware. Know. Engage.

Intelligent body knows how to listen to signals right away so it can easily adjust to the situation, and therefore achieve balance.  We can become so atuned to our body, that we know when we can push ourselves, back off, or take a break when needed. Aware of our body needs can be as simple as getting enough sleep, and commit to a realistic eating and exercise program.

S E L F L O V E | Day 8

Loving ourselves isn’t about putting ourselves first. Loving ourselves is about taking care of ourselves - mind, body and soul. It’s about how we value ourselves, and believe that we do have value to give to others. It’s about seeing ourselves as part of a bigger story with a role to play. See that we are equally as broken, but at the same time as valuable, precious, unique and important as anyone.

Loving ourselves is not about putting ourselves above others.  As Nina wrote- it’s not about making life about us; that is narcissism or self-centeredness.

Healthy self-care, also means serving and loving others equally, if not more. Loving ourselves in a healthy way, is about how we can love others well.

Look after yourself, so you can look after others.

G R I E F | Day 9

Grief is a process.

A healthy griefing process helps us get better with the passing of time. Grief can lead us through pain so we can make the necessary and healing stops along the way to that place where new life is possible.

While the pain of your loss is real and must be felt, there will come a time when you must begin to live your own life again.
Your process through grief are your own. Take time to grief. Take time to heal.
Those who grieve well heal well.

L E T T I N G G O | Day 10

Though it's well into winter in Australia, I am still surrounded by the gorgeous Autumn leaves. Every season is a reminder that nothing lasts forever. Everything has a moment of creation and destruction, but all are equally beautiful.

Honoring change is vital for our deeper understanding of ourselves. We, too, must change and let things fall off in order to regrow.

As we slowly work to prepare our body for compass, we are reminded that the present moment is all that we truly have. No amount of pushing and forcing will allow our body to open any faster, just as no amount of wishing or hoping will help us to create momentum in other areas of our lives.
Extreme opening in the hips often encourages the release of negative feelings and unexpressed emotions. Creating space in this area can help us to start to let go of our need for control over all aspects of our lives, freeing up space for creativity and expression.
With each breath, move yourself to a place of gratitude and consider all the things you have to be thankful in acknowledging all the things good in your life. A beautiful pose about letting go to heal and grow.

We must be willing to let go of the life we planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

Let go.
- so we can be who we are meant to be.

It’s not often in my life that I approach something without a goal. I always look for what I can achieve, what the action will give me, where I will be at the end. .
When I was a child I did things because they gave me joy, because they made my heart sing and brought a smile to my face. I know that I became good at things because I did them all the time without having to remind myself, or set to-do lists and timetables. I know that I loved every activity and after school club I went to and so I wanted to go back every day and do them more and more. .
But as an adult, I have lost that feeling. I love my work, and I love my hobbies but they always have a goal, a path. I feel like I have to have an excuse to do them, I have to do them in the most productive way, learning the best technique and the most efficient manner. .
.
But surrounded by people this week in Hamburg who do what they do because they love it, allowing their inner child to shine through and their zest for life to become clear, has made me realise actually how I’m lacking that feeling of excitement in many things I practice. That element of fun which I had as a child and which allowed me to go through each day with a feeling of curiosity and playfulness. .
.
So I’ve been trying to approach my actions like this - allowing myself a few hours a day to just enjoy. Getting on my mat and skipping the strength drills for a day and just flowing how I want to move. Turning up my music and dancing out my feelings with some bum wiggles and bad lip syncing. Jumping into a handstand without the aim to get the perfect line but because I love the feeling of walking on my hands. .

Yesterday I missed a flight; on the surface a negative thing. It cost money, time, missed classes and work. .
Underneath that initial layer however it allowed for a heart breaking confrontation to become a reconciliation. It allowed a connection to grow further between two people and it gave me an opportunity to find a deeper understanding of what I need to work on, manifest and unpack within myself. .
So this initial annoyance has not only become a positive but it’s given me a gift that I am extremely thankful for. It’s funny how sometimes life gives you these nuggets that initially look like a mere pile of coal, but on closer inspection you see they are full of diamonds 💎 photo by my own diamond @ishine_gape. 💖 wearing @yoga_democracy .

Vitality is the state of being strong, energized, and active. 🌞 We are constantly pressured to be all and do all, but the reality is we can’t. The best gift we can give to ourselves, and to others, is to find time to disconnect with the rigors of life and fill up our depleted tanks. If you’re able to do that on a regular basis, you will find a quality of life and a level of energy that reduces stress and increases well-being, both of which are necessary.

If asked what my fave pose is, I can't quite decide between splits and compass. So for my last day, chose a variation that combines both.

To conclude my journey of reflection as a spiritual beings wrapped in flesh,- we all have a need to connect with something that is far, far greater than ourselves.
For me, it's my faith in God that provides me with a set of core values to live by.

I try to use them to direct my life- where to direct my life's goals.
Bring meaning into our life- by contributing to people and to worthwhile causes.
Learning to love what we do.
Align our work with our unique talents or gifts, with our sense of calling.
Spend time in quiet and reflection to look after ourselves too- so we can look after others better.

Strength
Pfff... The only strength I had today was in sharing this.
Today was mentally and emotionally exhausting. From the moment I woke up it was anxiety through the roof and depression below the bodies buried at the cemetery.
Mental illness is fucking scary as hell sometimes. I won’t go into detail but I went to some really dark places today.
I’m an intelligent person who uses logic all the goddamn time yet when it comes to my own health, logic and reason aren’t even blips on the radar and I believe I can beat the statistics fucking “yoga and meditate my way” out of shit that any moron could tell you requires so much more. Yoga and meditation are as vital to my mental health as eating vegetables is to my physical health. But there are some things that are as vital to my mental as breathing air is to my physical, and sometimes I’m so delusional as to think I can survive longer without air than I can without broccoli.
As my amazing and patient beyond belief husband reminded me this morning, “You can’t un-think chemical imbalance.” And he’s right.
Unfortunately, if history tells us anything, this will not be the last time this happens.

Today was spent in Landspítali in Reykjavik getting checked out for arresting pain in my back. Good news is it’s not a collapsed lung, bad news it’s it’s a musculoskeletal injury that will need some time to heal. •

I get impatient with my body a lot. I hate having to rest. When I’m limited in what I can do, it makes me thankful for the privilege that is my daily practice. This is testing my patience within myself and forcing me to take it slow, to focus on the part of yoga that isn’t the asana - to observe frustrating people with detachment, to give myself a secret to breathe, to be in the present moment and immerse myself in the beauty of Iceland. •

I’m getting absorbed deeper and deeper into Iceland’s magic one day at a time.

I feel like I’m on a constant quest for open shoulders since starting my inversion practice. Who would have thought that raising your hands above your head correctly could be so difficult?! .
Often people open their shoulders in a backbend, targeting their chest and thoracic spine as well as the shoulder, but this tends to mean that the other areas of your body can compensate and allow the shoulders themselves to not open fully. .
By hollowing the torso and not allowing the back to arch in these postures, you can target the shoulders specifically.
A nice little add on for any shoulder mobility work you may do! .

TIPS:
.
1. MOVE SLOW! I always start by moving slowly between the hollowed and arched position to mobilise my spine and shoulders first. Feel the articulation through your whole spine as you move between positions, and really become aware where you feel the stretch most to make sure your targeting those shoulders. .
2. In Hollow, really draw your ribs together creating as much of a straight line in your spine as possible. This will make sure any opening of the shoulders is done directly in the shoulder and not being helped by the chest! .

Intelligence of Self... I chose #hanstand with child involved.
Are we aware of our thoughts when we walk around the supermarket,
Our breath when we talk to people.
Our feelings when we are with others and when we are alone.
Our ideas, are they new, old unrequited, original,
Our bodies. Do you know what your toes feel like, do you know where they are?
Are we aware of where we have put ourselves mentally. Is it and unhealthy or healthy relationship we have with ourselves.
Are you aware of using yoga tools in everyday life. Do you stop, and breathe when something is above your control. Take a step back and see if it’s not as bad as you think once you look. Do slow down and listen to the other person talking. Did you hear their story. Do you stop and hear your own story. Do you look and think something will take time to work out and get right in life. That once it was alien and in a while it will be like good friends did in experience and understanding.
Do you look at your yoga practice as something that is not just on a 6ft by 1ft Mat? A daily meditative, thoughtful intuitive outlook on life where everything is measured and respected and observed is something that if we stop, look and listen, we can see hear and feel. Yoga is all encompassing.
Intelligence of the self to me is a manifestation of this process in its organic form. It is you, whole living your life yogically, daily in whatever you do even with kids involved.

Both requires us to be strong, straight, open and flexible at the same time.
Both needs time to figure out what goes where, and its tough to get off the ground.
Both teaches you that being flexible brings more ease into your life.
Nothing good comes with force.
To move forward, best to focus on one moment at a time.
Remember to breathe.

If asked what my fave pose is, I can't quite decide between splits and compass. So for my last day, chose a variation that combines both.

To conclude my journey of reflection as a spiritual beings wrapped in flesh,- we all have a need to connect with something that is far, far greater than ourselves.
For me, it's my faith in God that provides me with a set of core values to live by.

I try to use them to direct my life- where to direct my life's goals.
Bring meaning into our life- by contributing to people and to worthwhile causes.
Learning to love what we do.
Align our work with our unique talents or gifts, with our sense of calling.
Spend time in quiet and reflection to look after ourselves too- so we can look after others better.

Day 13

PARENTING
.
I had to mull over this topic and what I felt comfortable to share
Parenting and having children has been my greatest joy and also my greatest heartbreaker
.
It's not to say I don't love my children
It's because I love my children so much that it's been heartbreaking at times
.
Being a first time mom I didn't think my eldest son was different
On the contrary, I thought he was brilliant
.
By 2 he knew the entire alphabet
By 4 he could cut perfect block letters and numbers freehanded
By 5 he would remember each person in his kindergarten class and could spell thier names by memory
.
It didn't seem odd to me that he didn't speak til the age of 2.5, I just thought he was perfect
.
Imagine my surprise when the specialists told me my son was on the spectrum for autism. My world turned upside down, this is when the heartbreak set in
.
Although he is highly functional
Children can be cruel at times especially when you're different.
The children would pick on him
They would call him names
.
I remember sitting in my car and watching him during recess. I would see him walking around the perimeter of the schoolyard alone and I would just cry: if he could just make one friend, someone he could play with,,,,
I could feel my heart breaking for my son
.
Yoga had taught me about accepting myself for where I am
In my practice
In my life
.
I learned how to apply these lessons to my son

It was okay he didn't have many friends
Because he was okay with it
I had to accept that he was okay where he was and my job was just to create a foundation of unconditional love and support for him
.
Today my son is doing great
He's so grounded and strong
He's going to be a junior in high school
He wants to be Captain of the track team next year and is in the advanced performing arts program for orchestra
He has a really close knit group of friends
He texts me silly jokes throughout the day
He feels safe to confide in me, We are so close
.
I couldn't be more prouder of the young man he is growing into .
He's one of my greatest joys
.
This is what it means to be a parent
But this is how it is different, parenting as a Yogi
.
