#Repost @lamjessfit LOW BACK PAIN? CHECK YOUR ASS
The hip and the lumbar spine are linked.
The reality is we work the hip to protect the spine. When the hip doesn’t work properly, when the hip doesn’t move the way we need it to, either actively or passively, we’re going to get spinal motion, and then we’re going to have back problems.
The solution to low back pain isn’t
found in the back, it’s in the hips.
If the psoas is tight, it weakens the glutes. Weak glutes prevent hip extension. The result is lumbar extension substituted for hip extension, and subsequently lowback or anterior hip pain.
Hip mobility requires the right muscles moving the hip joint to decrease the movement of the lumbar spine as a substitute. This means core stability is directly related to hip mobility. You can’t separate the two, because if the hips don’t move, the spine will.
TEST: bring the knee toward the
chest and above the level of the hip. This forces you to use the psoas and iliacus. If
u are unable to do this, one or all of three things happen: u will flex the spine and bring
the chest to the knee. Flexion of the lumbar spine is the leading cause of disk degeneration. Those who substitute back motion for hip motion get back pain, and perhaps eventually surgery. The ability of the glutes to work is critical, because if the glutes can’t work, there will be low back pain.
People with bad backs will often have disappearing glutes, the no-butt look.
When you see that, you know the solution.
The solution is squatting, single-leg work. It’s to get those glutes doing their jobs, get those hips moving. When you get the hips moving and get the glutes working, in most cases the back pain will go away
