You might have been hearing or seeing 100% WHOLE GRAIN- rice, pasta, bread, wheat flour, etc and probably wondered what it really meant and the nutritional implications.
This is what it means:
A grain be it wheat, maize, rice, or any that you can remember consists of 3 parts;
THE BRAN is the outer hard shell of the grain. This is the part of the grain that provides the most FIBER and most of the B VITAMINS and MINERALS.
THE GERM is the next layer and is packed with nutrients including ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS and VITAMIN E.
THE ENDOSPERM is the soft part in the center of the grain and it contains mostly STARCH.
If you eat a REFINED GRAIN FOOD- white flour, bread, processed rice, pasta, etc, you consume only the endosperm or the starchy part of the grain therefore, you miss out on a lot of vitamins and minerals.
However, if you buy and eat 100% WHOLE GRAIN pasta, bread, rice, etc, you not only get all the minerals and vitamins contained in the grain, but you will be feeding and nourishing your body.
