Sessile Oak sunset.
Whilst heading back to Aberdeen from Aviemore, I took a detour through Ballater to check in at Craigendarroch (‘rocky hill of the oak’) to see how it was looking.
There aren’t many oak woods left in the Highlands as many were cleared so the rich soils could be used for agriculture. The ones that are left are often small & in places unsuitable for agriculture.
There was a reasonably good acorn crop which, combined with the pine cones, meant the Red Squirrels were busy scurrying about trying to hide as many as possible from each other in preparation for the season ahead.
