We've been told for years there haven't been any birds in North Georgia for some time.
It all started during a cleanup for a continental pheasant shoot. We were coming to the edge of a finger, #sitheasshole was looking birdy on an adjacent finger next to us. I was watching him, shotgun open and on my shoulder, when I stepped right in the middle of a covey of 15 quail! Very healthy covey! Got my @huglukooperatif 103c breach closed and shouldered, fired both barrels, 2 misses🥶
Went back and talked with the club president, got permission to come back and put dogs on the ground again!
It was foggy as hell with extremely limited visibility when we came back. Make matters worse, a nut came off the bolt securing my control arm for the rear suspension while hauling ass on I-20! Squirrelly moment, the bolt wasn't broken, but was nearly all the way out. Thank you zip ties! After finding 2 neighbors and going through countless nuts, found one that worked. Threw the 4Runner into 4wd, and off we went.
The first point came, Si was pointing right off the drop of a shelf, no telling where they were. As we approached, I happened! The covey broke! I was covering the right wing, they flew left, I got no shot, but my host took one out of the sky with his Belgian A5. The bird landed further than the fog would let us mark. Right into a thick pine stand covered in BlackBerry bushes. Pulled Si to me and sent him blind into it on a line. Waited, and waited, and waited. Until he finally emerged, bird in mouth, to the hand!
We continued, to the other side of the property which produced another point in some thick cover. When the covey busted, neither of us had a shot. The cover was high and visibility extremely limited.
But, at the end of the day, we found 2 healthy coveys in a place where folks said they didn't exist anymore for various reasons.
You have to be willing to go find these birds! Preserve shooting is great, it's how we got our start, and its 99% of the guiding that I do. But, if you want the real thing, the entire experience, you can't let a couple goose eggs deter you.
Quit complaining about no birds when you're too lazy to go out and look for them!
