Zooming ahead to NGE23, we can see the classic mini 3-act structure at play in this 22 second scene with Asuka.
Shot 1: "Eva Unit-02, prepare for launch." Exposition.
Shot 2: Asuka laments on her situation. The audience thinks to themselves, "Where will this lead? How bad is Asuka's mental state?" Rising action.
Shot 3: The audience's question is answered. "I just don't care anymore." Real bad. An extreme close-up gives even more impact to the punchline's already strong wording.
I love how Anno leaves us on this dramatic line, immediately cutting away to the next scene that focuses on an entirely different subject matter, without resolving the tension left here. By deliberately doing so, it becomes a plot thread that's teased into the back of our minds.
Also notice that the first two shots have a camera push-in to maintain the energy set by the larger Angel attack sequence, but the last shot breaks this trend by being a static shot. Doing so further differentiates it aesthetically, and gives it impact as the punchline shot.
As with the previous mini 3-act shot flows, the shot sizes here progressively get tighter and tighter, culminating in that final punchline.
Once again, each shot serves its purpose as one act within the mini 3-act structure.
Shot 1: Exposition
Shot 2: Rising action
Shot 3: Climax and resolution
But that’s just what I see. What do you see in this shot flow?
