I respect @florencegiven. New levels of self-awareness are rising and a willingness to challenge the status quo that serves a minority not the majority. Unfortunately, there is no time for us to take a break.
repost via @florencegiven Because we are all complicit. Ways that I have been complicit in racism include the fact that I did not acknowledge my whiteness as an undeserved privilege, until I did my own research a couple of years ago at 17 years old and found that women of colour are scarcely represented in the fashion industry. I couldn’t understand why, I thought I didn’t ‘see colour’. I thought this was a good thing, that I wasn’t in ANY way a racist...what BULLSHIT! There is nothing more annoying than the phrase commonly used by us white folk ‘everyone is equal’ - while intentions are good, what we are doing is actively ignoring the oppressive and systemic forces against people of colour, that make us incredibly UN-equal in society. Good intentions don’t matter when they are so clouded by the ignorance of our privilege. We are blinded by it. That makes us complicit and part of the system that is RACISM, and yes...EVEN if your ‘best friend’ is black babe. The response I will receive from this post, is in its very essence white privilege. People will tell me I’m ‘woke’ and that I’m ‘speaking up’ - but black women have been saying this shit since DAY. ONE. It’s only because of my whiteness that you listen to me talk passionately, and don’t cast me off as another ‘angry black woman’. They will not get there without us, the same way women will never get a seat at the table without the support of male allies. We have such a depressingly long way to go, but it’s all or nothing babe. We can’t be half in, expressing concern for issues that affect only us...speak UP for WOC, not FOR them, and wise up about issues that don’t affect you so black women don’t have to explain - it is NOT their job. It’s your job, if you’re going to call yourself a #feminist, to do better. Love youuuuu
P.S want to make it clear that I don’t ever sell any prints/work that discusses issues faced exclusively by WOC, this work is to change minds - not profit from. Thank you.
