Are you a cold weather person, or do you hate it with a passion?
Here is another image from my trip to Yellowknife. I didn't set out to create any crazy images with insane foregrounds - I just wanted to see the Aurora again and create some simpler, more relaxing images.
This was my first time shooting and hiking in such cold conditions and it was a ton of fun! I've always loved the cold and this trip further cemented that love. Although it wasn't without its struggles.
Using a tripod is a nightmare around -35, because everything freezes up and the various knobs become very difficult to adjust and anything else that normally rotates, tends to stop wanting to rotate. This was actually quite annoying because of how much the Aurora moves and changes!
The other hard part is that to watch and shoot the Aurora, you need to stop moving. After a few hours, I lost feeling in my toes due to too much standing still. Luckily within minutes of hiking again, it came back 😂 I also lost feeling in parts of my face because I hate covering everything up with a balaclava. Thankfully I was able to get feeling back by breathing warm air onto my cheek on the return hike. It was easy to forget to check for lack of feeling in places with the incredible Aurora everywhere. With that said, I would definitely do it all again!
Looking forward to heading back to the cold for more winter adventures at the end of the month, this time in the Rocky Mountains. 😊
