I had a really interesting conversation a couple of days ago about this. One lady told me it would give children an over inflated ego.
My argument ... children hear or think negative things about themselves hundreds of time daily.
I’m not clever enough I got that work wrong
I’ve not got many friends
I’m not as pretty as ....
I’m not as clever as ....
And that’s not including the things we or teachers tell them - stop being silly, etc etc etc
Our job as parents is to give our children that over inflated sense of self to counteract the hundreds of negative phrases and comments they hear, and as our children get older, it’s even more important to do this (though often even harder!) If we are not there filling their bucket up with confidence, self esteem, love, encouragement, pride, who is? 😍
