Are you ready for a small histroy lesson?
We go back to the 90s, the days of the old DTM. Audi was competing with the Audi V8, which you can see on the left, against the E30 M3 and the W201 190.
There was a big protest going on, as Audi sneakily modified the crankshaft of the V8 while still maintaining the original part and therefore didn‘t break any rules as you were only allowed to use the original crankshaft.
Yet BMW and Mercedes protested against this unfair advantage for three times. In the last instance the crankshaft was declared as not compliant to the rules.
Audi was pretty pissed and left the DTM.
What has this to do with the pictured car you might ask? Well, Audi quit the DTM halfway through the ongoing season, they only left because of the crankshaft, it was kind of a „well feck you“ reaction. But they had already developed a new car for the upcoming 1993 season. Which is the pictured car. They obviously canceled the project. It was powered by a 2.5 Liter 6 cylinder engine with nearly 400 hp at over 10.000 rpm.
One car is still in possession of Audi while the second car (or at least the shell of it) was lost but rumored to be in the scandinavian region which is the car pictured. The owner put the pieces back together and showed the car to the world at the Tourenwagen Classics. It is a handsome vehicle with a great sound. I kind of wished that it wouldn‘t have been canceled in the first place, but that all contributes to the myths surrounding this car.
