I grew up a product of the early 1980s. We had typewriters instead of computers. Cassettes instead of streaming music services. Etch-A-Sketch and Light Bright instead of tablets. Everything was connected by wires or coiled cords instead of Bluetooth or wi-fi. And in my house, books were preferred to TV (by my parents). My colorful imagination was fueled by pages of black print on a lonely white background. My inner music snob was fascinated by music videos and my oddly curious brain wondered if images on our itty bitty 19” TV screen were transmitted just like Willy Wonka could send chocolate or bratty children. Simply put, I lived in a world of pure imagination completely devoid of gummy bear trees but full of little men. You’re supposed to laugh at that because I’m 6’1” and I have been since I was 12. Nearly all men are little to me!
Now, mere weeks away from 2020, I find myself connected to people and places in ways I never imagined. Now, instead of dreaming of chocolate waterfalls or that belching could make me fly, I dream of the planes that will transport me to far off countries. I learn about my ancestral roots, places where my family once lived, research, plan, and prepare to retrace their steps on solo adventures. Instead of magical boats, I crave fast paced European trains that jettison off to multiple countries in the blink of an eye. I’m already craving what my 2020 travel imagination will bring me.
There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination.
